WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Justice Department has approved a much-anticipated merger between Delta and Northwest, clearing the way for the creation of the world's largest airline. Federal regulators said Wednesday the merger would likely benefit consumers without substantially reducing competition. Another hurdle remains ahead, however: a federal lawsuit seeking to block the deal. Trial is set for Nov. 5 in San Francisco. The combined airline would be called Delta and keep its Atlanta headquarters and its chief executive, Richard Anderson. Northwest would become a wholly owned subsidiary of Delta during the integration process. Wednesday's decision caps a six-month Justice Department investigation of the deal.

Alright, so the Fed says the merger will likely benefit consumers... do you buy it?

Thanks for blogging,

Corrina

Well If the Fed says that then it must be true! Right? It would help low the price of airline tickets since there would be less competition. I am all for mergers if they help the people. This one in my reading will help out the airlines and it might actually cut down the amount of delays since there will be one less company taking up space on the tarmac.

It is a different world when I was with USAIR in the late 80s. I was originally Piedmont Airlines and when bought by USAIR was thought to be good. But it wasnt. USAIR was Union, and Piedmont wasnt... so that destroyed much of the employee moral. I hate UNIONS. I left at the merger with my small pension and CD saved to start my business. I recently hired 2 ex USAIR pilots to fly my private Aircraft. They thought I was nuts to leave but after they lost $500,000 in pension money due to the bankruptsy, they look at it different.

I have no sympathy for companys like airlines hurting and in trouble. They can only blame themselves. After 911, when the big airline CEOs begged for bailout money, not one of the House and Senate members asked them to treat passengers better. I havent flown Commercial in years.

A cabbie picks up a Nun. She gets into the cab, and notices that the VERY handsome cab driver won't stop staring at her.

She asks him why he is staring. He replies: 'I have a question to ask, but I don't want to offend you.'

She answers, ' My son, you cannot offend me. When you're as old as I am and have been a nun as long as I have, you get a chance to see and hear just about everything. I'm sure that there's nothing you could say or ask that I would find offensive.'

'Well, I've always had a fantasy to have a nun kiss me.'

She responds, 'Well, let's see what we can do about that: #1, you have to be single and #2, you must be Catholic.'

The cab driver is very excited and says, 'Yes, I'm single and Catholic!'

'OK' the nun says. 'Pull into the next alley.'

The nun fulfills his fantasy with a kiss that would make a hooker blush.

But when they get back on the road, the cab driver starts crying.

'My dear child,' said the nun, 'Why are you crying?'

'Forgive me but I've sinned. I lied and I must confess; I'm married and I'm Jewish.'

The nun says, 'That's OK. My name is Kevin and I'm going to a Halloween party.'

Being big and powerful in not a crime. If they leverage that size and power to block out upstart companies that are lean and mean, like Southwest, then it becomes an issue. If it doesn't help consumers, someone will see that and fill the nitch to meet those needs and fill their pockets (this is good, not bad). The stockholders in the big companies will be happy. This is capitalism ... the is the American way. Product and service will determine the profitablity of a company. Look at Ford Motor Company. That giant and former monopoly recently had stock selling for less than $2.00 per share, the lowest since 1939. Trust the market and trust the American entrepreneurial spirit and bust corruption and illegal practices when they occur.
