TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Alan Crotzer already has received $1.25 million in compensation for spending more than 24 years in prison for crimes he didn't commit, and Tuesday he was pardoned for two other offenses.

Gov. Charlie Crist and the Florida Cabinet unanimously forgave him for stealing beer in 1979 when he was 18 years old and introducing contraband -- marijuana -- while he was in prison in 1991.

"I just think it's important that when somebody obviously has changed their life that you recognize that, you give them a second chance," Crist said. "I'm very proud of Alan Crotzer."

Crist had urged the Legislature to pass Crotzer's compensation bill and he signed it into law earlier this year.

Crotzer was released after 24 years, 6 months and 13 days when DNA evidence in 2006 proved he was innocent of abducting and raping two women from a Tampa home during a robbery.

He doesn't need a pardon for those 1982 convictions because they have been overturned in court. He hopes the pardon will help him achieve his dream of returning to prison as an inspector for the Department of Corrections.

"I put so much behind me, but there's so much in front of me I've got to do," Crotzer said afterward. "Prison offers nothing but corruption and chaos and mayhem. They can hardly feed them, clothe them or house them, and there needs to be some reform."

Blog us with your thoughts.  24 years is a very long time to spend in prison for crimes he didn't commit.

Thanks for blogging,

Corrina

I am happy for him. I hope he is wise with the money. I think I read recently that he got married or was getting married and also that his mother died before he was released. The man has so much to be bitter about but he seems to be channeling all that into the right direction. I wish him many many happy days enjoying his life.

Wow, this is awful. We really need to fix our court system rather than simply hand out money and apologizing for it being so bad.

Unfortunately there are alot of people in prison who don't belong there. Most of the time this happens due to plea agreements. In alot of instances the prosecuters office adds charges, (whether they are warranted or not doesn't matter) in order to scare the person into accepting a plea agreement. Happens all the time. Now, I'm not saying all, but this does happen to many. The prison system is big business these days and all that the public hears about is how much it costs to keep a prisoner for a year, but what isn't talked about is how much is made off of that same prisoner. The entire prison system needs to be evaluated and so does sentencing structures and the guidelines for obtaining plea agreements. Don't get me wrong, I have no sympathy for those that break laws, but it seems that people can be tossed in jail for just about anything these days. A classic example....the elderly woman who took the childs football and is being charged with petty theft! (That would never have happened when I was a child.) This woman could possibly be facing 6 months in jail! Oh and btw, I am a former court clerk.

Theres no amount o money that can give back the years that were lost. he will need a lot of mental help and since he probably has no insurance he'll have to take the money awarded to spend on doctors.

With that much time inside I think he would make a good Inspector for the Department of Corrections.

Most people in those jobs are hired by cronies and will look the other way instead of reporting problems.
