WASHINGTON (AP) -- Facts went astray on tax cuts, negative campaign advertising and oil exports when Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain engaged Wednesday in their third and final presidential debate.

Some examples:

OBAMA: "Every dollar that I've proposed, I've proposed an additional cut, so that it matches."

THE FACTS: The bipartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget estimates that his programs would add $281 billion to the deficit at the end of his first term. The analysis includes Obama's proposals for saving money.

------

McCAIN: "We have to stop sending $700 billion a year to countries that don't like us very much."

THE FACTS: This is a reference to U.S. spending on oil imports. McCain has repeatedly made this claim. But the figure is highly inflated and misleading. According to government agencies that track energy imports, the United States spent $246 billion in 2007 for all imported crude oil, a majority of it coming from friendly nations including neighboring Canada and Mexico. An additional $82 billion was spent on imported refined petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel and fuel oil. A majority of the refined products come from refineries in such friendly countries as the Netherlands, Canada, the United Kingdom, Trinidad-Tobago and the Virgin Islands.

------

OBAMA: "One hundred percent, John, of your ads -- 100 percent of them -- have been negative."

THE FACTS: The statement is true when it comes to McCain's current commercial spots. But by saying McCain's ads "have been" 100 percent negative, Obama ventures into misleading territory. McCain is currently running all negative ads, according to a study by the University of Wisconsin-Madison. But he has run a number of positive ads during the campaign.

------

McCAIN: "Sen. Obama is spending unprecedented amounts of money in negative attack ads on me."

THE FACTS: Obama is spending unprecedented amounts of money on ads, period -- negative or otherwise. Obama is outspending McCain and the Republican Party by more than 2-to-1 in presidential ads. At one point in August, 90 percent of the ads Obama was airing were against McCain. A study conducted at the University of Wisconsin-Madison found that about 34 percent of Obama's ads are now negative.

------

OBAMA: "I want to provide a tax cut for 95 percent of working Americans, 95 percent."

THE FACTS: Obama constantly says this. But the independent Tax Policy Center says his plan cuts taxes for 81.3 percent of all households in 2009.

------

McCAIN: Said of Obama's running mate Sen. Joe Biden: "He had this cockamamie idea of dividing Iraq into three countries."

THE FACTS: Biden actually proposed dividing Iraq into three semiautonomous regions, not separate countries. He was a prime sponsor of a nonbinding Senate resolution that called for Iraq to have federal regions under the control of Kurds, Shiites and Sunnis in a power-sharing agreement similar to the one that ended the 1990s war in Bosnia.

------

McCAIN: "Now, we have allocated $750 billion. Let's take 300 of that billion and go in and buy those home loan mortgages and negotiate with those people in their homes, 11 million homes or more, so that they can afford to pay the mortgage, stay in their home."

THE FACTS: Ordering the government to buy up bad mortgages to cut homeowners' monthly payments might sound good, but experts are skeptical. They say the plan McCain is promoting is unlikely to solve the housing crisis that's pushing the economy toward recession. One big problem: The vast majority of the toxic home loans that are clogging financial markets and freezing up credit have been repackaged into complex investments that the government would be hard-pressed to unravel and buy. And the government could end up paying far more than they would ever be worth. That could primarily help banks and lenders with taxpayer money.

Who do you think won Wednesday night's debate?

Hi Corrina,
Who do I think won? McCain, Obama is untrustworthy in my opinion, and he reinforced that belief tonight. I just hope the rest of the country saw through him tonight and will not vote for Obama.

Like I said before if America is so stupid to vote Obama in then I guess we deserve all we get.

Hm. The 3 aimed a Obama are legitimate strong . . . and surprising statements that lead me to question his trustworthy-ness even more that I already do with his “Promise Everything” campaign. On the other hand, Any but the most BLIND Obama supporters can see that ALL ( 100% . . . and that’s not an Obama “100%” claim ) of the ones aimed at McCain are splitting hairs and ridiculous. Such as:

#2 – 700 Billion to Foreign Energy: Obama’s camp has quoted this same figure as well as various Energy experts. I wonder if ALL of them are wrong, or just this source. You can slice things up many ways.

#3 – Obama’s lie about 100% negative: What kind of SPIN is this to say that, “[yeah, Obama flat-out lied . . . but . . . hold on a minute . . . if we look at McCain’s ads at this VERY SECOND (“current ads”), then it’s true.]” Who wrote this, Mathew Dodd? You could say that Obama broadcast 100% negative ads too by that definition. Obama made it clear, repeated it even, then denied it was a lie – that 100% were negative. He was very clear. This surprises me because it’s the kind of lie you expect from a child who hasn’t yet learned the consequences of lying. The scary thing is he said it to us without even a blink. He must think we’re all morons.

#4 – Obama’s Attack Ads: Unprecedented money on Ads . . . Many of those negative (90 % at one point) . . . so it’s a safe and fair assumption to say “Unprecedented money on Negative ads”. And the “fact” not only didn’t deny that, but states that at one time Obama had 90% negative ads. Do the mat

math. What kind of a “fact” is that?

#6 – 3 separate semi-autonomous regions VS. 3 separate countries: Come on. Splitting hairs. We all got the point and neither candidate speaks with that kind of Precision. To suggest McCain was being deceptive here over insignificant (to the point) terminology is ridiculous. I saw a Meet the Press interview in which Biden stated this. It was a rough idea and I’m pretty sure he didn’t use the term “semi-autonomous region” either; not that it makes any difference to the point that Biden hasn’t been the most sensible idea-tank on Foreign affairs – contradicting himself often to fit the argument. He and Obama share that trait.

LAST ONE – Not even a FACT. This “fact” is some person/people’s opinion(s).

Apparently they couldn’t find any legitimate misrepresented “facts” from McCain so they split-hairs over details that make no difference. Looks like we need a FACT Checker on the “Facts”.

I can agree with that Gman;
after all Fact Check is funded or run by Anneberg, the same guy that has ties to Obama and Ayers...but, wait, according to Obama during the debate...it's all "ok"

Analysis of the two plans fails to mention -Obama plan forces a 10% tax increase on all business except small businesses. The PRICE of increased taxes is passed on to all consumers and employees.

Take EVERYTHING YOU BUY from electricity, gas, toothpaste, groceries, retail...
Multiply that by 10%....
And that is what the Obama plan will cost every American....

PLUS MORE - price increases, layoffs, exported jobs, reduced benefits, plant closures and unemployment.

GM alone will be taxed $128 BILLION under Obama (45%). That means advantage to #1 TOYOTA - who can build over 1 million cars with the difference in TAXES ALONE vs. GM.

TexasHorns, please say it isn't so......we are going to soon experience "price increases, layoffs, exported jobs, reduced benefits,, plant closured and unemployment?"

I'll bet that next you will be telling us something even more devastating like maybe the taxpayers having to bail-out Wall Street, or the stock market falling. You even dare suggest that under Obama, GM will no longer be doing well?

I thought that Obama was running for president, not that he had already been in office for a few years.
