Okay, so it's a plan for partial shutdown.  We're talking six days.  To learn more about this rather unique idea... keep reading.

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Facing a huge hole in Chicago's current and upcoming budgets, Mayor Richard Daley announced on Tuesday a plan to partially shut down city government for six days.

Along with several other measures, the mayor's plan was aimed at saving $62 million for the city's corporate or operating fund, which currently faces a $469 million shortfall.

Under the plan, city employees, with the exception of mostly public safety workers, would not work and would not be paid for the day after Thanksgiving or for Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve this year and in 2009.

Daley also said the fiscal 2009 budget he will unveil on Wednesday will eliminate 1,346 currently vacant positions and will include various cost-cutting or revenue-raising measures.

"I know that no one will be completely satisfied with our recommendations," the mayor said in a statement. "But, if we work together and responsibly cut spending this year, we'll be taking an important step toward addressing the financial challenges we'll still face in the years ahead."

On Friday, the mayor announced the consolidation of several city departments in a move that will cut almost 240 jobs and save Chicago about $5 million a year.

The city expects to collect $2.52 billion early next year from a long-term lease of Midway Airport to a private operator, but most of that money would be earmarked to pay off airport debt, as well as for infrastructure improvements and pension funding.

Daley has rejected using all of the remaining $100 million to tackle the budget shortfall.

What do you think about the mayor's decision?

I believe we need to focus on what's good for the State of Florida and what's going to happen here. It's bad enough that our electric companies are going to hide behind other stories - and - right after January - hit us all with a ridiculous rate increase of 30+% - what I'd like to see is the News Team staying on top of that story so it doesn't happen. I can see a rate increase of 7% or so - but over 30% - that's highway robbery.

While we know that fuel went up, it shows the waste of Chicago’s politics and fiscal management, what are they going to shut down? and the employees, are going to say yes "don't pay me for the next six days", on top of that their pension plan for the state is in 44 BILLION in a debt, where is the money, are they going to close the schools (#1 worst in the country), Fire Department (second busiest in arson fires), Police Department(violent crime #2 in the country), this shows the “bad” left by good old nobama and his crooks and that’s what they want to place in Washington.

Easy enough! Florida can tap into offshore drilling and bring in more revenue than tourism ever would! We have a state that is surrounded by oil rich areas on three sides! Of course Pelosi and Reid already have the bill to snatch back the ban on offshore production for the US. (mind you Russia and China will be there slant drilling 45 and 60 miles off of our coast anyways...

Offshore drilling actually makes our beaches CLEANER!! the natural release of oil from the ocean floor that washes up as little tar balls and slicks has all but vanished from California beaches as the rigs they have offshore have releived the pressure! But now your enviromentalist would not make any money if they were honest about that would they....

Chicago.. (windy city) Hmmmm.. wonder what we could tap there?

I think maybe Chicago should bring in "America's Mayor" from NYC and let him show them how its done then... I suggest we all take a look at what metropolitan areas/states are hurting, then look at what party is controlling it.... I think you might find a trend.

B. Hussein Obama is proud of what he has done to Chitown? WOW To bad this news didn't come out sooner. If it had, I think that would have knocked him off the block and made the witch look like an angel.

What do you think about the mayor's decision?

I think Obama's probably promised the Mayor a "safety net," of billions of our dollars in the event the plan fails...I'm sure Pelosi, Reid, and the other idiots ironed out a cash infusion for them.

I agree with Abunai - I could never understand why we don't bite the bullet and drill off of our own shores - it's out there - so why not?

You can't turn a witch into and angel.

Witches are women, and Angels are Men.

Angel names? Michael, Gabriel, Lucifer, all male names.
