I received quite a few emails yesterday telling me that Iraq was a winnable war, and many more emails that said our troops should get out now.  That's fine, I like a little outrage from time to time but let's be honest here, if you are going to tell me that George W. Bush has done a remarkable job in Iraq and that this war is winnable and that I'm an idiot, you've got to back that up with some facts!  Leave emotion out of it.  I ask you these questions:

Since you disagree with the Generals who led the war and have said that there is no military solution in Iraq, how then do you define victory? Now that the Iraqi government is about to dissolve, who should lead it? Should our troops continue to absorb bullets from enemies they can't identify? Should our troops, who are trained to fight, be asked to build a nation between groups that don't want a unified nation in the first place? Since you disagree with the Generals who say a political solution is the only way, how do you define a military victory? The stage is yours!

You can always call me an idiot, I welcome that, but the other stuff needs facts to back up your arguments.

Perhaps you should lead Iraq. You seem to have all the answers since you agree with the general who wrote a letter. I have no interest in calling you an idiot. I respect your opinions, but I believe if we leave Iraq as unstable as it is, it will turn into another breeding ground for terrorist like Afghanistan was. You want facts? I have a cousin who still serves in Iraq. He says they are upbeat in making a change. What saddens him and the rest of the troops is stuff like this media crap that is seperating the country in two! I think your post about the mission accomplished banner sent a chilling "slap in the face" message to our young men and women in uniform. I don't think any of them would find it cute or funny. They are fighting terrorists over there so YOU can sleep well at night here. Like I said before, I'm glad it is over there and not here.

Also...If I may comment, I would recommend you keeping your "funny" stuff out of Iraq and our troops mission. Not many people here in the US find it very amusing.

Are you now speaking for the entire US? As I recall 67% of Americans want us out of Iraq... and 64% of Americans believe the war was a mistake. No one, and I repeat NO ONE is making fun of the troops, they're making fun of the incompetent leadership that got us into this mess in the first place, sold it to the American people, and fooled the media into believing it would be a cake walk. I love how it's somehow unpatriotic to want our troops free from being killed everyday. If that's unpatriotic so be it. All I'm saying is that if it's "Mission Accomplished" then bring our men and women home. If that was a lie, as it appears to be, then please tell the American people what the "Mission" is!

See, we did win the Iraq War.. we won it in like less then 5 months. That was a winnable war and we crushed them from 5000 miles away...

The "WAR ON TERROR" is not a war.. and its certainly not winnable. you cant control peoples beliefs.. these people believe what they are dieing for is for their god and believe they get 72 virgins when they die.... you cant later that so theres no point in losing our troop's lives over it!!

Maybe we should focus that money into alternative enerrgy sources so we ont give money back to them to fund the terrorists.

It's up to the President and Congress to decide when and where to go to war and when the "Mission" is "Accomplished" based on recommendations of the Generals in charge. Not the average person on the street answering a poll. Is this how we want to handle our Homeland Security? By taking polls? The right thing is not always the popular thing.

World Trade Center Deaths: 2752
American Deaths in Iraq: 3355

More Americans have died as a result of President Bush's military actions in Iraq than died at the hands of Al-Quaeda during the WTC attacks.

Continuation of this war stopped making sense a long time ago, if it ever made sense at all.

If the president is playing Call of Duty 2, then yeah, let him fight the war and kill as many troops as he wants. but this is not a PS2 game and thats what he does not get.

His job is to protect, serve, and listen to the american people. If the country does not want an OFFENSIVE "war" then guess what? He needs to listen to what the citizens in his country say. Right now, neither the citizens nor the ecnomic situations hints, in the least bit, toward him having an above average reason to be losing our money, troops, and time!!

That is just the sad excuse that die-heart Bush followers along with his spokesmen, use to fend off the AMERICAN PUBLIC

You're certainly right in your observation that matters seem to be going from bad to worse on the Iraq front. However, given the fact that we have been measuring our success in military terms rather than in terms of what the "battle" has become -- a fight against terrorists in Iraq who are targetting US military forces -- I think that we will need to begin to reassess just what it is that we are trying to achieve in Iraq.

The Bush administration's decision to use military operations in Iraq was based on what pretty much everyone agreed at the time -- on both sides of the aisle -- was a real danger from Saddam. In addition, the military understood that it was an opportunity -- finally -- to put some permanent bases in the Middle East before matters in the region began to fall apart even more than they were. With the increase in Islamist terrorism that could be used to disrupt many of the Gulf states -- and, potentially, have a direct impact on the continued flow of oil from the region -- the military was certainly dealing with the situation in a prudent manner.

What wasn't "prudent" or realistic was the fact that the US military was not prepared to deal with the aftermath, the increase in insurrection-minded groups -- terrorists -- that have used Iraq as an opportunity to target the US without actually having to enter the US (as on Septembner 11th). From the jihadists' perspective, our presence in Iraq gave them a chance to not only target Americans (who happened to be wearing uniforms), but also to have a major impact on the US economy and domestic politics.
