Blogging 101

You might say I just completed a course which could easily be titled "Blogging 101." It was an hour-and-a-half long session at a convention for journalists and student hopefuls... and apparently... bloggers we're not!(at least those of us at the seminar... which is probably why we were at the seminar-Unity 2008)

When asked for a show of hands of how many currently blog there was a small percentage of the room. When asked how many have been blogging for more than two years about 10 people's palms went up in the air. TEN people in a room of about 200. The speaker(from a national news magazine) who posed the question had been blogging for just seven years.

According to the Columbia Journalism Review: "In 1999 there were dozens of blogs. Now there are millions. " http://cjrarchives.org/issues/2003/5/blog-jensen.asp>.

Point being: blogging is a relatively new sport. And if it were football... I'd be in Pop Warner. Baseball... the minor leagues. I still find this to be new territory... and like a babe in the woods I'm still tip-toeing around as I find my place.(see my colleague
John Schwada's blog. He's so good it has been picked up nationally!) I point out my trepidations only because I'm determined to master this blog thing... and ask forgiveness for past web errors.(I wrote just a few lines once and you web viewers let me know I had committed a web wrong. "Write when you have something to say" wrote one responder)

So as I find my way in this web world... the question now is... "who am I?" As a reporter I'm used to interviewing a subject and reporting THEIR story. My style is not a Bill O'Reilly expressing my own thoughts and opinions... nor did I think as a journalist I should(my colleague Bob Tarlau just did a blog on the independent presidential candidates. It seemed to be opinion free and a great look at a specific topic). If YOU have a favorite blogger send me their link. Interested in reading the best blogs? Check out the webblog awards http://2008.bloggies.com/ LA's Perez Hilton was nominated several times. http://www.perezhilton.com/ Personally, I don't have much interest in celeb news or gossip, so this isn't a site I'd visit. Speaking of lighter topics. My colleague Susan Hirasuna just did a blog on music and sending her child to his first concert. While it is not a hard hitting topic I felt the fun urge to respond with my own first concert story. (It was to see Kool and the Gang... am I dating myself???) My passion is my work with Wednesday's Child and finding homes for children in foster care. But, you all probably don't want to hear about that every week.(My colleague Tony Valdez has a great segment called "LA's Most Wanted"... but is currently blogging about The Nightstalker case) In the future my blogs will be a combination of current events, LA happenings, newsmaker interviews and a little personal fluff.(can't wait to write on my new puppy! and get some puppy training tips!)

Blogging 101 was the perfect class for me. I learned tips and tools of the trade. One speaker said he's on the internet EVERY DAY, ALL DAY. But then again, his blog is to make money. It is his job. If blogging were the military... you'd have to say I've been drafted. DRAFTED??? Yes, drafted. Reason: unlike those who chose to blog I am among those who are joining the blog world thanks to a mandate/request by my company. Fox is among the smart companies not wanting to miss the blogging boat.(A panelist from Bravo TV said its celebs are under contract to blog weekly http://www.bravotv.com) The internet is the current and future and blogging is a whole new way to brand one self, generate advertising dollars and reach out to a whole new audience. And why not. Blogging is big business.(check out the Blog Herald and read about one of the largest blog sales... a deal worth 25 million dollars! http://www.blogherald.com) Then, according to the seminar, are those who blog to share a passion or viewpoint but who's advertising earnings can be compared to middleclass America or most likely the working poor. And finally, there are those who blog... and only mom reads it.

Which gets to my next question. Who is reading my blog... and WHY?(I know my mom has read it at least once) Seems Fox 11 has a few regulars... I mean really regular... I see you respond to most all of us. Samo, Mystere, Dasvics, DfDeportation, Craftyguy. Are you all on the internet ALL THE TIME? Df... you had about FIVE entries in Bob Tarlau's last blog. Seriously... how do find the time? Just curious.

With my new internet education I learned one must stay on top of their blog. So I promise to respond more rapidly... or at least once a week. Now, to the responses... one panelist said "bloggers are not bullies... they're geeks." HER WORDS, not mine!!! Frankly, I'd love to be a geek named Bill Gates!!  Still, I must admit I'm still building the thick skin panelists say you need. Sometimes you/we bloggers/bullies/geeks can be hard, cruel, blunt... or completely honest. I'm told you will "fact check" us to death. For that I thank you. But back to the thick skin... even my mom was rattled by one responders harsh words. She resisted the urge to respond. I made an appointment for web-therapy. Hey! That's an idea... a psychologist geared to handle what I call "web-trauma." A web-ologist. Or as a panelist said... just don't respond.

With that... I end "Blogging 101" and return to work on our nightly newscast... (something I'm much more comfortable with) See you 10pm... or on the internet.

Hi Christine!

Thanks for the honorable mention on your blog! The main reason that I'm often responding to you and the other Fox11 reporters is this: I think you all write something interesting enough to capture my attention, and I get ideas for my job in radio by corresponding with everyone on the sites. If there is one thing about the blogs, it gives people an idea on what others may be thinking nationwide on a variety of topics.

By the way, if you get a good laugh out of any of my replies on your blog, or anyone else's blog, I'll take it as a good sign. I try not to be mean spirited under all circumstances; I know the consequences I will be dealing with...last thing I want to be dealing with is answering to God the reasons why I said such and such when I knew it was wrong, either in this life or the next. Believe me, I've already blown this way too often!

I'll be back...Take Care Now!

Remember when they used to call it interactive television? My fist Internet experience was Web TV. It was cheaper than a computer and really really neat.

This is what I have a problem with... you're asking who reads these blogs and why right? Now I hear an answer in your own question... The retired... the disabled... the socially challenged and frankly those who don't get out much. It's sort elementary isn't it?

But wait... there's more!

Christine... are you one of those who blogs and puts no replies? So it's not interactive television anymore is it?

It's kind of like having a banquet in your home and finding some pschizophrenic homeless people to come in and enjoy dinner and movie.

You won my heart with you Wounded War Veterans blog that spoke of hands on money giving support (as opposed to lip service patriotism). But at the end of that blog you thanked folks for our comments and believe me when I say I have an inkling you work harder than the average broadcaster.

So with that I can only repeat my opinion of you "To Aire is human but to support is Christine Devine."

So... what's for dinner? Crafty... you're driving me and DF... mystere's X is bringing him. Samo can't make it and Fox wouldn't get Dasvics a plane ticket.

LOL! I loved it. Great post Christine. This is why I like "blogging", (even the word itself is geeky, I totally agree with you) but I like it because everyone gets to express themselves anyway they want, exchange information, ideas, whatever.
I'm ashamed to admit it, I do comment A LOT and my husband hates it, he thinks it's a complete waste of time, nothing but non-sense (most of the time it is) and that everyone who "blogs" is either lame, stupid, or crazy. I used to as well, but there's a lot of good stuff hidden in the nonsense, honest opinions, and most importantly, different perspectives on the issues being reported by biased so called professional reporters, like illegal immigration or Obama. So I changed my mind, I like blogs, I love the internet, and I prefer getting my news and information online, than from television.
As for the stupid and argument baiting comments, what can you do? Not everyone’s on the same wavelength and although it is best to ignore them, sometimes it’s fun to play along, hence the “entertainment” aspect. I admire certain people who are completely in control, always make intelligent comments relevant to the topic, and don‘t waste their time on BS: Moogie,… ok, just one person :-)

Dear Christine,
Bignickib wants to know where I can take a course like this at Kalamazoo Valley College in September to cover for my English 1 credits I never took my junior year of High school . I also love the show and love blogging .

DfDeportation: what do any of your three postings here have to do with Christine's blog? They are all off topic and posting them is disrepectful to Christine who I'm sure put a lot of thought and effort into her blog.

Wow, you all are on it quick.

Media.. always, love to you too!

Craftyguy. You are right. The panelists said corporations who do blogs often don't do as well as the private guy because they aren't on their blogs enough. Quote... the professional blogger "will eat you for lunch." That's panelist who said he's on ALL DAY. I haven't committed that kind of time yet... but will aim for at least once a week. Hey, I'm already on it two days later!

Mystere, seems your having fun with this. That would be my motivation.

Statueman... yes, you're right... responding is kinda what it is all about. The blogging thing is just so different from straight reporting. I wasn't used to regular interaction unless to cover a specific news story.

Dasvics. You make a good point about varied opinions and different perspectives. I think that is one of the things I've gained by reading all the responses over time. It is easy to get lost in one's own world, friends and perspective. Some of the responses have brought light to issues. So, I respect that.

Big... good luck in finding a class. Mine was at a convention. You might have to look around. Maybe some kind of internet course if nothing offered where you are at. It is still a new enough field, with perhaps still a narrow audience that there might not be enough interest for a class or a curriculum. If you do an internet search you can learn a lot about the topic... history and raising money, etc.

DF... thanks for the Youtube on marijuana... I think!? Re: Bratton. I do agree celebs like Britney, Paris and Li

So Christine, since you'll be here only once a week, can we put our lunch on your tab? You don't appear to be learning much from this convention you attended. Are you an intellectual, like Bob Tarlau?

hi lovely christine! i've been pondering for twelve hours what makes an ideal blog from a news anchor. it's clear to me that you think. deeply! your blogs have been well thought and well presented while being rather lengthy! when you develop the theme for your blogs, i'd go with five points. of the five, two can conflict with the other three. my idea is that one keep her blog to an easily digestible meal, say an hour lunch at Arby's, rather than a five course state dinner. your writing skills are superior (and some of the fox11 on-air candidly lacks writing skill!) and you seem to have a lot to say to people. if you were conversing with your mom each night for five minutes, one of the topics, each day could become your blog. you've the talent to write a column everyday. admittedly, i am not especially interested in reading opinion pieces online, and i am more amused by political columnists' ideas than by what i learn by reading. for me, political columns are similar to weather reporting on-air. tomorrow the viewer forgets what was said yesterday. there is an element of cut and paste or madlibs to creating a blog once you've your five points identified. schwada seems to read several other people's political columns and then he regurgitates it. amezcua is simply shallow. cough. top shelf hirasuna writes has a deeper message in what she feels would make a good blog. dorothy is simply not thinking at all and i feel her blogs are embarassing because of their lack of point. she could do better. much better. she ought to review her ideas the next day before she posts

(hey dorothy) this would be a good idea for any blog. Christine, you are certainly a skilled writer and could likely hit post, after just a quick review. obviously, dorothy does not review hers (smirk) and this is the antithesis of impressive. ok, CD, spill the words! love you. marv

Christine,

I will say kudos to you; as a behind the scenes radio guy, I know how crazy it can become, trying to meet deadlines, and having things look like they're easy to do. I know you have an even crazier schedule as a television reporter and news anchor. I sneak in time to blog while I'm doing some program downloads off an ftp site for the station I work for. It's a bit tricky doing multitasking on the computer, but I manage. I hope you're having plenty of fun corresponding with the bloggers. I also have a site of my own, and my hope for my personal site is that it will help someone out during a time when he or she needs to read something encouraging.

Peter...I'm giving you a pass on your joke...now behave yourself (har har!).

Don't work too hard Christine!

It has been my honor to work(anchor 10pm news) at Fox 11 news since 1990(yes, I started when I was 2!) Jokes aside, Fox 11 has allowed me to continue my passion for knowledge and education. My parents were both educators and stressed "knowing about our world." They were aid workers in Brazil(my heritage) and Africa and emphasized a caring for community. I love coming to work each day and being a part of "what's new." Fox 11 has allowed me to serve through our Wednesday's Child program. Our goal, to help children in foster care... who will end up on the streets at 18... find permanent safe homes. Through WC we are using the power and outreach of TV to find adoptive homes for children in GREAT need. My parents were foster parents and adopted one boy. I was adopted by my step-dad, which gave me the name "Devine." At home, I enjoying cooking and fitness. I have a new puppy for the first time since high school and am completely in love. (and with my fiance too!)
