To Favre or not to Favre....

Brett Favre has gone from being Braveheart to Dracula. From unkillable to undead.  From legend to rumor. 

First, reports surfaced that Favre had an "itch" to get back into the NFL, and that his family was urging him to do so.

That was quashed when Favre dismissed those reports as "rumor".

Now, it seems Favre has text messaged Packers GM Ted Thompson, and that Thompson said he was on vacation, and that they'd have to talk later.

Yes, Favre is one of the Top-10 quarterbacks in NFL history, but this act is getting a wee bit old.  Either stay or go.  Either play or retire.  Please Brett, don't pull a Star Wars episodes I-III.  Some things are best left finished as they were.

If #4 does return to the Packers, it keeps them from truly moving forward in their development of Aaron Rodgers for yet another season, and will probably affect Rodgers pysche as subtly as a wrecking ball affects an old building.

If #4 returns to a different team, it'll be wrong on every level.  It'll be like Derek Jeter wearing a red B on his cap.  Like Jackie Chan starring in a dramatic role.  Like Mr T. wearing a full head of hair. 

Just, WRONG.

So here's my question for all the My-Fox Bloggers out there----To Favre, or not to Favre?

Brett needs to retire. Aaron has been sitting on the bench for 5 years, and it's his time. If Brett retires, I would look elsewhere if I were Rodgers. Did Brett get bored, or did he just want to opt out of training camp? Either way, this nonsense is diminishing to Brett, Aaron, and the Packers- it really puts them between a rock and a hard place.

It does highlight the importance of these pro athletes needing an education and career outside of football- if they get hurt, or need to retire, they need a life outside of sports, and I don't think Brett and many others have taken the time to cultivate one.

There's lots to do out there, and Brett needs to focus on the needs of others, like his family and his community, instead of himself. He could do a lot of good- it's time to let go.

I'm a little surprised to hear that, Mr. Tanaka. Green Bay loves Brett, as they should. But it shows good sense, even from someone who wears a cheese shaped hat! Although I suppose I shouldn't talk- naked people dyed blue and orange walking around with nothing but a rain-barrel and a smile isn't much better! LOL!

HA! Funny comment. It IS a tad surprising. However, I don't think it's unfair. The organization and fans NEED to be able to move on, prepare for the future, and groom their next QB...Favre can't play forever.

I believe Favre has been pushed away from the Packers prematurely. If Michael Jordan can do it, why can't Bret?

If the superstar wants to play foodball, let him. Even if it is another team.

I will admit is is refreshing to hear about another football team in the news for once instead of the typical "Denver Bronco gets arrested for dui/possesion of cocaine" story. We are join to need a jail for the team soon.

There's the other side of the coin workboy. Favre has definnitely "earned" the right to come back if he wants to. Frankly, could the Packers even THINK of saying no to him?

Yes, actually, I think they could, and should. No man is an island, as they say, and it's not all about HIM. Is this fair to the team? Many have "earned" kudos and respect, as Brett has, but knew when to step aside gracefully. He announced that he was retired, after MUCH ado, and it's time for him to let the team move forward with a new leader- Aaron Rodgers has earned respect, too, with his restraint and uncomplaining back-up to Brett, and he deserves his shot at it. Brett's really giving this guy the shaft- now, if he takes a while to get going, everyone will be screaming "Let Brett Play"! And if Brett comes back, how unfair is that to this guy who has been training so hard and getting ready to be the starter?

I can't comment on whether Brett was "pushed away pre-maturely"- I don't know enough about it to make that judgement, but if not now, when?

I do have to agree it is a "toss-up" for that coin? If I were the coach of the Packers, I would certainly be standing on top of the fence. On one hand, I have to think of the "future" of my team. I can only let my second string QB sit the bench so long before he jumps ship. I have already adjusted the offense around him.

On the other hand, I know I could bring Favre back and possibly win one more Superbowl so he can change his mind again and retire.

If it is my decision, I think about the future of my team and release Favre. If he is "itching" to play like he says, He won't have any trouble playing for another team. So he may be a threat for 3 more years max. That is probably what it will take to get the "new" Packers on track.

You both bring up great opinions/observations...One thing that I'm finding out----everyone's got an opinion on it. Favre is such a huge sports figure, whatever he does, people will watch!!

workboy- yes, that must have been tough for Brett last year, having the season end the way it did- he must be thinking, "if I had one more shot"...

We'll see what happens- it does make things interesting!

Did you hear Marshall got pulled over again- geez, you'd think when you were under the microscope you'd be more careful!
