Check out my story from Thursday night on the 9-year-old Hartford girl who was suspended from Rossman School for having a hammer, a screwdriver and rocks in her backpack.

I'm curious to see if you agree with the school that a 3 day suspension was appropriate.

I Missed Out. I Didn't Get Home Till Late, and I'm Using A Out of Whack Compuiter, But What Happened? Did They Say Why She Brought It To School and/or What She Was Going To Do With It?

The story is a first grader learned about how some rocks sparkle when you break them open, so she brought rocks and the tools to break them open to school to show her friends. she was suspended for 3 days and given a permanent record for bringing dangerous weapons to school.

The police investigated and said the little girl didn't mean any harm by what she did, that she believed she had discovered something cool she wanted to show her friends, and that she had no ill intent.

She should have asked before hand if she could bring the items to school with her, but she's a what, 60 pound 8 year old with no history of bad behavior, or acting out.

I think personally this was a serious over reaction. She should have been maybe lectured about the fact that what she did was wrong, given 1 day of afterschool detention and then suspended if she did it again knowing it was wrong.

What's sad is, Bullies get a slap on the wrist for tormenting a student... an 8 year old gets suspended for 3 days for a geological discovery that most kids don't start learning till they are in 3rd grade.

But I think, a lecture and I could even understand an after school detention in this case. And if she did it again, more serious punishment since she would then know it was wrong.

I agree, Aravynandrea.
I am sure she didn't even understand she did something wrong.

Also, my mom who is a retired elementary school teacher also agrees with the over-reaction opinion.

She said that when she taught she had a few children in her class that bullies tormented, and no matter how often she'd send the bully to the principal to be punished, they would send them right back with a warning.

One of the kids finally acts out and hits the bully in self defense, he gets suspended. Her hands were tied. She did all she could to protect the kid being bullied, and in the end, the bully was the one who got away with it.

Same with when my older brother was in middle school. This kid tormented him, would steal his homework, push him into lockers, tear up his reports, and my brother would get a 0 for not bringing in his homework even though he told the teacher what was happening. The teacher did nothing, and wouldn't give my brother a grade even though he had proof the kid did it.

Finally he beat the crap out of the kid the next time the kid stole his geography paper and shoved him... and my brother got a week suspension. The Bully never got anything but the beating my brother gave him.

So this case is just like any other. Schools who get all high and mighty on the wrong person.

Aravy....I had the same situation with my daughter, so I taught her what to do. These were boys who would knock her down, hold her in the snow and just make her life miserable, so I taught her how to take them down and then hold them. The principal became upset with me for teaching her to fight and I told him that he wasn't doing anything so I had no choice.
I tried to teach my children to ignore bullies and namecallers, but I refuse to have them be belittled and lose their self-esteem.

When I was still doing Martial arts (I recently had to retire after a car accident. Hoping to get back into it one day after I heal from 2 surgeries) but anyhoo.

When I became a first degree black belt, I assisted in teaching some of the kids classes. a lot of the kids were coming in to learn how to defend themselves against bullies because the school wouldn't do anything about their pleas for help.

One kid said he was suspended for throwing a rock at a bully who had just tried to pull down his pants... his mom sued the school, put him in a new school and put him in Tae Kwon Do to learn self defense.

Kids get suspended for innocent mistakes... Bullies get off scot free for torturing other kids.

I put the fear of God into one bully. I was driving to pick up my daughter when I saw him shoving her. I sped up and did a dead stop right in front of him. I got out of the car and gave him some words to think about. He stopped after that. His mother actually had the nerve to call me up and ask why I did that. I told her if she would teach her son to not be a bully and act like a young man I wouldn't have to.

LOL

My mom was the same way. There was one bully picking on my brother, so she drove both my brothers over to where the kid was and watched them beat him up.

The mom reported my mom to the school for watching her kids beat up on her son, and they were going to suspend both my brothers but my mom's like

"A. it happened on a Saturday OFF of school property... you have no jurisdiction, and

B. My son was getting beat up on school property, and because he'd always get in trouble for defending himself, would tell you instead of fighting back, and you did nothing to help.

I'm doing something about it. And I guarantee you, with that broken nose, he's going to think twice about bullying anyone.

If you want to make an issue of it, We'll make an issue of it. We'll make an issue of when my son had a bloody nose and the teacher told him to use notebook paper and wouldn't let him go to the nurse.

We'll make an issue of the 3 times my son had been punched in the face, and nothing happened to the kid, but when he retaliated, my son was suspended. We can make an issue of things for a long time. TRY ME."

Mind you, this was back before everyone became so sue happy. lol.

That's why this situation is so stupid. An 8 year old girl with some rocks and a hammer gets suspended even though the cops said she meant no harm...

and the stuff you and I talked about, the real problem childs, the bullies, almost always get away with things. Its stupid. I'm glad I'm not in school anymore. And I'd hate to be a teacher in this day and age.

Good for your mom!!
I feel so sorry for this young girl. She was probably very excited about what she learned about the rocks and just wanted to share.
My youngest is 10 now, but when he was in Kindergarten I remember a teacher calling up to report to me that he had hugged a girl. I just sat there holding the phone and waiting to hear what the problem was. It turns out the hug was the problem. You can't hug anyone. I was flabbergasted. With so many aggressive children they actually found the time to complain that my son gave an innocent hug.
I had to find a way to explain to my son that hugging is wrong.

The mother should have known about this, right? I think that she has been treated a little hard on this one. I would have looked at the child's recards and if she had any blue slips or detention. If this is her first time doing something like this, than let her go. I feel bad for the little girl.

I heard and saw this story on the news and it is plain to see that the girl is very young, and just wanted to share a new discovery with her friends. The school did more than over react. Now this girl has a record that will haunt her in the future. The record says what the school put in the girl's record. A hammer and a screwdriver are tools and not meant to be weapons. There is a difference between a stone and a rock. calling the stones rocks is misleading. I admit that other kids have used hammers and screwdrivers as weapons and they knew what they were going to do with them. This girl did not intend to use them as weapons and there should be an appeal process so this girl does not have the stigma as if she intentionally brought a weapon to school meaning to hurt someone.If they were rocks she would not be able to break them with a hammer like the one she used to break the small stones that were shown in the news story.
perhaps the principal should go to school to learn to tell the difference.
It seems like there is a future geologist in the little girl.
Then there are the examples of Bullying that are so often overlooked and more often ignored by the public employees at the schools.
When I was in the 7th grade I was bullied too. only this was from the "homeroom" teacher.
I solved this problem by not going to homeroom every morning. They looked at my attendance record and saw that I was missing homeroom and the first period class I was there. The reaction to my explination was a laugh from the principal untill I got other students to say that they saw the teacher hol

the principal should be fired for showing bad judgement and the girl should not have been suspended.

i agree! the school overreacted. i wonder how the rocks, hammer, and screwdriver got into her backpack in the first place. great job, as always, chris_goodman, on the posting of this blog.

It looks like I used too many words in less space and I was cut off while I was saying that my homeroom teacher held me up to the wall and slapped me three times in one week and was fired.

Why did she need with a hammer, screwdriver and rocks?

But this sounds like the usual witchhunt complete with overreactions.

She needed the hammer and screwdriver to break open the rocks, (or like someone else said, they were smaller stones)

She discovered that a lot of stones sparkle inside when they're broken open, and so she started breaking open rocks around her house and found some had different levels of sparkle while others had none.

She brought a few rocks to school to show her friends.

I mean remember, she's only like 8... to 8 year olds this is a cool discovery.

I pulled into Nazareth, was feelin' about half past dead;
I just need some place where I can lay my head.
"Hey, mister, can you tell me where a man might find a bed?"
He just grinned and shook my hand, "No!", was all he said.

Take a load off Annie, take a load for free;
Take a load off Annie, And (and) (and) you can put the load right on me.

I picked up my bag, I went lookin' for a place to hide;
When I saw Carmen and the Devil walkin' side by side.
I said, "Hey, Carmen, come on, let's go downtown."
She said, "I gotta go, but m'friend can stick around."

Take a load off Annie, take a load for free;
Take a load off Annie, And (and) (and) you can put the load right on me.

Go down, Miss Moses, there's nothin' you can say
It's just ol' Luke, and Luke's waitin' on the Judgement Day.
"Well, Luke, my friend, what about young Anna Lee?"
He said, "Do me a favor, son, woncha stay an' keep Anna Lee company?"

Take a load off Annie, take a load for free;
Take a load off Annie, And (and) (and) you can put the load right on me.

Crazy Chester followed me, and he caught me in the fog.
He said, "I will fix your rack, if you'll take Jack, my dog."
I said, "Wait a minute, Chester, you know I'm a peaceful man."
He said, "That's okay, boy, won't you feed him when you can."

Take a load off Annie, take a load for free;
Take a load off Annie, And (and) (and) you can put the load right on me.

Catch a cannon ball now, t'take me down the line
My bag is sinkin' low and I do believe it's time.
To get back to Miss Fanny, you know she's the only one
