ChrisMerchant's Blog

In which category to post this blog; that is my conundrum.

There shall be some humor; “Entertainment” would be in order.

It will be topical; “News” would be in order.

It’s definitely opinionated; so it might get censored.

Hmm…

I’m glancing over a few different postings and comments on today’s blogs. There’s the usual: generic liberal bashing of conservative, generic conservative bashing of liberal, random shots at various politicians, the occasional mention of illegal immigrants, friendly name calling and chiding about some people’s tendencies to do this or that, comments on VA Tech and gun control, crime, war funding or justification; then it dawns on me: I am doing it again!

Have you ever noticed how spelling and grammar affect your opinion of the idea being portrayed in the writing? Perhaps a blogger’s opinion/question/position is valid, but due to his lack of practice with prose, you write him off as a dolt and dismiss anything he states. What of the blogger’s age? I take it into consideration in most instances; assuming the naïve questions of the junior set are based on the relative lack of life experience. Now, compound that with a consistent spelling or grammatical error pattern, and, hopefully, you will see my point. But what if said pattern is consistently in the composition of an adult?

I have made similar comments before (we all remember my polite yet honest opinion of Truthguys’s spelling skills: “Colonel, your spelling sucks, Sir” and my entry from January of this year: “Has the common denominator killed common sense?”) and have been accused of being erudite and elitist. One responder suggested I shove my opinion up my college “edjudikated” posterior. This vexes me; please read on…

Before I continue: I would like to point out that this posting to this point contains 7 semi-colons (ok, now 8); all properly placed. It also contains: 4 instances of quotation marks, 4 occurrences of colons, 5 eliminations of the “Oxford” or “Harvard” comma (now 6), one instance of poly-slash usage, a parenthetical sidebar, a correct usage of an apostrophe when confronted w/showing possessiveness of a singular noun ending in “s”, and 2 ellipsis (…). There is one other thing:

I graduated high school with a 2.8 GPA, in essence flunked out of my only year in college and have spent the bulk of my adult life piloting a semi-tractor trailer combination vehicle across this great land.

Why is it that I, a mere truck driver, have the desire to express myself in such a manner when it comes to stating that which I hold most dear, MY OPINION – a right guaranteed to me by the founding fathers of this, the greatest nation in the history of the world, and by the 1.2 million American Veterans since 1775 that have sacrificed their lives for that right which we all hold so dear (http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0004615.html) - and others don’t take the time to run a simple spell-check? Am I being erudite and elitist? Does anyone else hold this opinion? I mean not to offend with this, but GEESH! You’re putting things up on a highly publicized website that is accessed around the world! Google’s Firefox web browser has a spell-check function that’s automatic, and it’s free!

OK, I’m off the soapbox. Tell me what you think…

We have spell check? Actually, spelling does count with me. I look up words that I am not sure of. I do think the way you express yourself is important when trying to make your point. One of my daughters teachers admitted that she does not correct spelling on anything but a spelling test. That is insane!!!I think all of the short cuts we take when emailing is just plain WRONG! I often email clients that are teachers and I am EXTRA careful with spelling and punctuation. I'd bet most kids in high school could not compose a letter to save their life, or write a check, or address an envelope. Even when I text message, I use the full word and punctuation. Do you think that some people feel that their opinion is that important that I should have to decode their spelling? I will admitt that I have a problem with typing hte....the.

Chris, the common demominator may have killed common sense, but video killed the radio star.

I'm usually typing so fast I hit extra letters. I am a (14 yr.)diabled veteran and served this country well. If I didn't spell something correctly...that's my right. I think I've earned it.....other than that..I agree.lol
I need a dictionary just to read half these words in your blog. Show off....

I'm starting to train myself to use word with spell and grammer check because I get to typing so fast I skip words or miss spell words or leave words out. That copy paste things is starting to work for me. It may be called cheating but oh well! I'm very upset with myself when I hit DONE and then read it over again seeing all the mistakes. I tsuj t'nod wonk tahw emac revo em!

Functional illiterate, yes I am. Spell check doesn't work, if the word is spelled right, but the word is wrong. Their-There/I'm not as dumb as a stump, but close. And in the world of blogging, I only know what "LOL" means, when anyone runs a bunch of letters together I don't understand. It's all good, I will "untie".

I don't see anything wrong with trying to improve your skills , but I also do not take it as a valid point that a person who lacks experience with writing has nothing to say or should be invalidated based on there writing skills (or in my case total lack there of) .
I my life the only “writing” I ever had to do was to be able to fill out an invoice and sign checks (it comes as no surprise that the guy signing your checks does not get any criticism about his writing skills! LOL ) No it was not until two years ago that I leaned something interesting about other people and the way they process and store information..
Long story short , I had visual dyslexia as a child and for most of my life thought I had conquered it , I did not realize that in my case I had chosen to store everything that I learn as “audio” information, it never dawned on me to think that other people where storing information as print and not sound ! I can see the clear advantage, to bad I am so old it is not possible to “re train” my brain.

The only other thing I can add is that anyone (even me) improves the more we practice so I try to listen to what a poster has to say and not “censor” them based on spelling or writing skill . If they are motivated to keep writing they will improve.........
And the most important thought I have on this subject is that a “dumb” idea is not improved if it is written perfectly.

northton, you should do stand up, although I don't know if your wit would be as funny as it is, if it weren't in writing. You crack me up!

Provocative post and well-articulated Chris!

I'm guilty of passionate typing, which results in typos/mis-spells and sometimes improper grammar! While in high school and college I was an excellent speller, but alas with applications like MS-WORD, I've gotten lazy!

I fondly recall asking my dad how to spell a particular word -- and the answer was always "look-it-up!" My kids just have to type it into Google!

P.S. Truck Drivers are okay in my book!

I have a dictionary beside my computer, but I still make mistakes.Sorry for being human, but within blogs everybody makes mistakes. As long as you can understand what they were trying to say, it shouldn't matter.

Chris, you make a good point. Burn is also right. We shouldn't write off comments made by people who have trouble expressing their thoughts in writing. It might just be that they're terrible typists or they’re simply products of a failed public school system. I struggle with the typing thing myself. I am right-handed but no longer have use of my right hand so sometimes my typing isn't as good as it should be. By the same token, how they express their opinions does reflect on how they're received. But that still does not trump what they say. Take Northton for example. He may be witty at times, but that doesn't hide the fact that he's a bigoted knuckle-dragger who hates all Christians as well the American way of life. He accuses Christians and Americans of being prejudiced against anyone who disagrees with them while he does exactly the same thing himself. You see, he feels that you’re being intolerant if you disagree or criticize another person’s ideas, especially his. What he SAYS reveals his bigotry. Not HOW he says it.

By the way, I spent a big part of my life in the trucking industry. I was Director of Fleet Operations for a major truck leasing firm and a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers. My father was a fleet manager as well so I grew up with diesel fuel in my veins. You need some real smarts to be a trucker today.
