Weather or Not

by ChrisHiggins from FOX 2

Last Post 10 days, 2 hours Ago

Hello once again from the desert.  I'm now past my 1/2 way point and it feels great knowing there are fewer days ahead than are behind.  But there is still a lot of work to be done.  The weather here has taken another turn.  Now it's not just incredibly hot, but the winds have turned off the nearby water and now we settle into the mid/late summer pattern of steam.  The overnight low last night was 84 with a dew point of 84.  Some people pay to have that kind of steambath...we get to enjoy it for free!

Now, on to good news. For those of you who have been gathering your men's flip flops I now have a drop off point.  Mark Christopher...host of "The Mark Christopher Show" on The BIG 550 KTRS... (M-F Noon-3pm) has brought the folks at KTRS into the mix.  They will be serving as the main drop off location.  I'm also working with my good friends at the Mail Depot in O'Fallon, MO to arrange for shipping.

If you're just hearing about the flip flops...here's the deal.  When our guys are wounded they are rushed directly to the closest medical care.  They often are stripped down....and have no clothing.  I was talking with some of the medical folks here a couple of weeks ago to see if there was anything they could use...and they suggested flip flops.  Especially men's flip flops.  This gives them something to wear (and then pitch) while they are at the receiving treatment.  They also suggested small lap blankets for them to cover up with on the plane when they get transported from theatre hospital to larger european medical facilities.

To help drum up support for this drive I will be going on Mark's show either later today (Tuesday) or Wednesday.  Listen in to get more details.  As always thank you for your support!

-Chris

Wow...if you get 500... we won't need anymore. I would be happy with 100 total...but I'll take 500. Nothing flashy. The guys just want to be able to get around without walking in their bare feet.

They deserve to not be walking on bare feet!

Having said that Chris does KTRS have a address that I could mail a package with the shoes in it? I dont have time to make it down to ktrs any time soon! That would help out tremendously! (sp)

Chris,
Great hearing your voice just now. I've e-mailed my Farmer's agent to make sure he knows that he's "collecting flip flops" I hope you get the 500 that perky is forecasting. Can't wait til you get home.

Hi Chris,
I don't think my first attempt went through so I'm sending this again just in case.

My name is Dale and I am the Sr. Vice Commander at VFW Post 8677 in Fairview Hts, IL. I am an Air Force/Desert Storm vet. Our Commander heard your plea and asked me to check into your flip flop request. After checking the blog it looks like it may be covered already. We would still like to help in any way we can so please let us know what ever you need and we will get right on it. Thanks to you and everyone with you . We support our troops and want to help.

Dale, great to meet you and thanks for your service! I'll keep you in mind as this whole thing unfolds. I'm getting a feeling this may get much bigger than I originally expected...which is AWESOME!

One thing I failed to touch on in the interview were those lap blankets. I would equate them to something you might see your grandma have over her legs while she's in the rocking chair...if that makes sense.

I can't thank everyone enough...starting with the BIG 550 (now I know where the BIG comes from..heart!) on through all of you who are helping as well.

Well, the sun is up here on Wednesday morning and it's time to start heading in for work.

Chris do they need T-Shirts also? Many times groups sell t-shirts for whatever function they are promoting and they have tons of leftovers and don't need them anymore. In the past A Soldiers Wish List received the shirts and sent them out for the wounded.

This is a new video put together by a volunteer from A Soldiers Wish List. I hope you like.
