While working on a story involving racial discrimination, one of my sources recommended I read the book Sundown Towns. In it, Author/Sociologist James Loewen identifies and describes towns that once made sure minorities were out of town by sundown.

I was amazed to find an Illinois town mentioned on the first page, with a shocking description. And as I continued reading, towns all around us kept popping up, some of them even with symbols and attitudes that haven't changed. After discussing this with colleagues at Fox 2, we decided to visit a couple of these towns to see for ourselves. None of us could recall any previous media attention to this topic.

When I contacted the author, James Loewen, he agreed, few have touched this issue and he told me that no one in the Midwest or Northern part of the U.S. has tackled it (even though Loewen says the problem is predominant here). He added that it's critical citizens discuss this issue and come up with solutions.

If you miss the report February 21st on Fox 2 News at 9, you can watch it by clicking on the News tab. We'd also like to hear your stories here, including other towns with a history of this exclusion or any that you believe continue. James Loewen will also be checking in with us sometime late Thursday afternoon after he returns from one of his seminars. Based on the stories you post here, he may be able to fill in some details that he uncovered as he traveled the country looking for Sundown Towns.

I am glad to see this story brought to the American people's attention. This just shows that America has a long way to go to combat racism. Laws and regulations need to be changed. People need and should want a change because this would defintely be a change for the better. The world is only has good as the people in it. Please keep this story going because it is much needed. thanks c.wade

This sure isn't a surprise to me. I have lived in southern Illinois for over 20 years and several of the were spent in these Sundown Towns such as Benton, McLeansboro, and Nashville. Being that I'm not originally from here, I was born in Mississippi, this was quite a shock when I first moved to Benton. Some of the people who live in these towns definitly don't want anything to be changed, they like it just the way it is.
Thanks
Casey

Chris,
I feel convicted to tell this story, About 10 years ago i was in management for a local company and needed to bring some of our staff
across the river to complete a grand opening set up. I picked some our best employee's and headed over. after our arrival and we have been working for a couple of hours, store management told me that they had recieved complaints because some of the employee's
i had brought with me were african american's
I was open mouth and a gasp at the comment.
Where was i and this must be a joke whirled through my mind.....NOPE this man was serious!
Being "middle management" i called my supervisor and informed him of my situation and
was looking for advise instead of doing what was in my gut.I was so angry inside i was almost beside myself. I wanted to scream but instead i called in and was told that if the customer's were complaining; i should "DESFUSE"
the situation. Shamefully i complied without
protest.Since then i have moved on in my own business. And since then i have asked my God for forgiveness. I still feel shame that i did
not stand up for their right's and instead took
the easy way out and let someone else make the
decision for me.
Your story is again makes me think, where am i
or this must be a joke!....NOPE
THANK YOU for standing up for all AMERICANS!
GOD BLESS YOU FOR "DOING THE RIGHT THING"
RESPECTFULLY--- SERVANT OF CHRIST
NOT A PERFECT SERVANT

Anna stands for aint no n????? allowed.
By the way, I am shocked that people are shocked about this. I guess because I am black, I see things that non blacks dont wanna see. Many blacks already know that there are some areas where we aint safe. Nighttime or Afternoon

What was the point of this report? I will be the first to agree that we should not ignore the sometimes unfortunate history of race relations in rural America. However, I consider the Sundown report to be yet another example of pandering and playing to the concept of "white guilt". You did not formally document any specific examples of racial violence. What does our community gain from such a report in light of the headlines of your 5 pm news today? I am referring to the alleged rape and robbery of a woman in south City. I am referring to the incident that began at Chippewa and Hampton, progressed to north city at Shreve and I-70 and ended up near the Botanical Garden. Was there a racial compenent to this crime? And how welcome would the somber and serious Mandy Murphy be at the McDonalds at North Kingshighway and Natural Bridge after sundown? Reports such as yours add little to meaningful dialague on the subject of race relations. Fox 2, you can do better.

I could not have said it any better. Thank you Wwizard. I still cant believe that Chris Hayes cannot provide a news worthy story. Instead of depending on the publics eyes and ears maybe he should try to use his own. This is one more reason why racial tension still exists. Once again, Fox 2, you should be ashamed of yourselves.

All I know is I was not raised to see people for the color of their skin. But as a human just like myself.

pretty much all of washington county, il, except for the area just outside of Centralia, is sundown. if you see blacks, its either they're passing through or they're there due to work. some of the towns (especially Nashville) sound their fire horns every evening at 5 pm.

I am a white female and I know that I would not feel safe in some area's in St.Louis, so does that mean there should be a name like ain't no whites allowed, while I agree that the majority of the black community gets a bad rap and that is totally unfair, but sometimes it seem's to me that there are some who want everything for free, 20 years ago the town of Centerville, Mo. was such a town and now there are a few black families living there. Sorry if I offend anyone I don't mean to and the term African American is not right to me, because then all of us American's should be know as German American's Italian American's French American'sand so on. Everybody should be able to live where they want. I had a wonderful black family that used to live next door to me and I miss them very much.

Well I am a white female in a Macoupin County Il town. I have a child of biracial heritage and this stuff still continues on in present day. You would have thought that in the year 2007 that the "N WORD" would not be used anylonger but it is. It was amazing to hear the same story I was told as a child about the white female being raped by a black man way back when. This is the story that is told by the older generations as the reason for really no other races to be in our town. People still call the local agencies to report when a questionable black person is in town. I can't believe that people are really this stupid still. You may want to believe that small towns have come along way but you really need to look at it closer and ask people that really know just how mean people still can be. Thanks a lot for opening peoples eyes again to this.

It is great to hear someone say that "we are all the same" but society really doesn't look at it like that. I hope that as generations pass and the younger generations start taking over political positions that things will look better for everyone. In small rural communities people state I have a black friend I work with but they won't invite them to a party or gathering at there home, nor do they want there white daughter to date a person of color. They think it okay for other families to deal with this but heaven forbid that its in there living room of there home. People really need to look into themselves before they open there mouth about another human being.

I aggree that this story is another one of the "non-stories" that FOX 2 seems to pander to. Why not report on the many instances of racial harmony that we all know exist, probably in much more proportion, rather than the disharomony. Not enough interest or "bang" for the reporters ratings would be my guess.

Wwizard you are right on. As a white man there are places that I or my family would not be safe in after dark. North St. Louis, East St. Louis to name two. Members of my family have been murdered, robbered and beaten; not by whites but by blacks. So it goes both ways.
Fox2 should stop stiring up the racial pot.
