The newest poll of Missouri from the Public Policy Polling grup, is an eye-opener for anyone who still doesn't think that race is the big (and hidden) issue in this campaign.

The poll reveals that overall, John McCain leads Barack Obama in Missouri, 50% to 40%. That would Missouri out of the "battleground" column and into the "safe for McCain" category. But the devil, and the truth, is in the details. Obama is losing badly in Missouri because a huge number of white people oppose him.

Accordin to the poll, 46% of white Missourians support Kenny Hulshof, the Republican candidate, for governor. 45% of them support Jay Nixon, the Democrat. In other words, the two are running dead even among white Missourians. Bugt among those same people, McCain has a 21 point lead over Obama, with McCain drawing 56% of the white vote, while Obama just gets 35%.  Among African-Americans, it's a blowout--81% for Obama, 14% for McCain.

Why the disparity? Easy answer--racial polarization. And despite the best efforts of some pundits and some voters alike to stick their heads in the sand and deny that race is the central issue in this campaign, the reality of the numbers keeps popping up in state after state. Bob Herbert of The New York Times has an interesting column on this effect in Michigan.

Substitute "Missouri" for "Michigan," and the situation seems pretty much the same.

'Among A-A, it's a blow out-81% for Obama', sounds like he could have any stance on any issue and get the black vote. I guess race is a factor.
That's sad, the black community would let themselves be misled, by a gifted speaker who lacks the substance and experience to lead the country.
Statistics don't lie but statisticians do.

According to the poll, 56% of white Missourians support John McCain, while 35% of them support Barack Obama, the Democrat. In other words, McCain is winning by an amount commensurate with the difference in experience between the candidates, but a significant minority supports Obama and the contest remains competitive. But among African-Americans, it's a blowout--81% for Obama, 14% for McCain, and the actual election returns will show that those numbers significantly understate Obama's black support. (It's the "Bradley effect," where respondents who don't want to admit that they're voting for the candidate of their own race lie to pollsters.)

Why the disparity? Easy answer--racial polarization. Polls show that Obama is even carrying black Republicans by a large margin.

Did you ever doubt that he would get all the black vote?

Does any of this really surprise you?

Isn't it easy to see why cities like Detroit and Atlanta have black mayors? In time, St. Louis will have one also.

I understand that by the year 2040, whites will no longer be the majority in the US....Watch for big changes than...and the changes won't be better either.
Detroits mayor is in jail and do you remember Marion Barry? I think that was his name....

Odd how race is a factor in the last comment here.
Now, of course it has to do with perceived inexperience.
Okay, how do you explain George W. Bush being elected. He only got where he is by his Dad's influence. He doesn't have any qualification at all for the office of President of the United States. And his record shows it.

To me the issue is the health of this nation, and the party that will be best for the overall health is the Democrat Party, whose policies have for over a century been aimed at the betterment of ordinary people -- the great populace of our country.

STL has already had a black mayor. Freeman Bosley jr. And why shouldn't blacks vote for him? We go towards the familiar. But alas, I forget. We are all either idiots or criminals.
Although I still think Obama is an idiot at times. Where is Colin Powell when we need him!

Hey ,whats with jaco, we have had two black Mayors in St Louis that could not have been elected with out the help of white vote.

Freeman Bosley jr.1993 to 1997
Clarence harmon 197 to 2001

lets not forget white St Louis county and
County Executive Charlie Dooley landslide majority win 2006..

Could it be its because St louis and St louis
Co is Democrat majority as is Kansas City

The rest of the State is Republician majority

That would count for even vote for the two candidates numbers running for Governor.

If you just polled St louis,St louis Co and Kansas city what do you think the numbers would be for Obama ..
Come on Jaco we are not all that slow, but thats one reason I don`t like your reporting you do think we are..

You are right mechany black people can vote for a black just because he is black. Nothing wrong with that. The reason you vote for one over another is nobody's business but your own.The reason blacks vote for blacks is because they blame whites for slavery. This is not exacly true. Blacks were made slaves by blacks while they were still in Africa. Most were prisoners of war resulting from tribal nation building. They were ransomed killed or sold. They were bought by Africans. Many were sold to whites because they were cheaper than European slaves who were my ancestors.

All I was saying is the reason people vote the way they do is myriad. So they will vote ofr Obama because he is mixed heritage or they will vote for McCain because he is white. Or They will vote for the reason they just happen to agree with that persons policies.
Personally, I am going to vote for Barr because I happen to agree with him more than the big guys.
Sure, there are some blacks that blame whites for slavery. Then there are others that know what really happened. It is a fact though that whites owned blacks and some, for some reason unknown to me, can not let go of the past. Now, it was the Dutch that did the bulk of the slave trading from Africa. They saw a market and took advandtage of it.
They were as you say, cheaper than white indentured servants, a fancy way of saying slave, but more politically correct at that time. They did not know that they would never be able to buy their way out of servitude like they were promised.
Some seem to forget one big thing. It was legal at that time. We grew up and figured out it was wrong.
The thing that bugs me is race being brought up all the time in this election. Most of us are smart enough to look pass it. At least, I hope so.

Barr is my favorite candidate also. I can't vote for him and take a vote away from McCain.

To me the issue is not race, as much as having a man elected as our leader that found nothing wrong with staying with a church for more than 20 years that preached hatred against Whites.

He had to of heard this type of preaching many of times doing his attendance. There is no way it was just the one time that preacher had a sermon as the one we heard.

90+ percent of blacks will vote obamer.....

The percentage of whites voting for McCain won't come anywhere near that figure.

Kdubken, there is something wrong with that! We should be voting for experience, opinions, ability and past records.......not color!!!!!

It's obvious whites are attempting to do that but it will end in their demise. If whites were to vote by color only, like the blacks,...McCain would win in a landslide!

He may anyway!

Libs are ignoring everything bad about obamer to get Republicans out and the only reason is that the media made him look terrible to those who WANTED to believe it. The people who believe it are fools! He has been a great President!

I've got to tell you Charles that political analyst you had on last night that stated race was the sole reason for the disparity in the governor vs presidential race is so pro-Obama it can't be hidden. First, Obama is as white as he is black, having a parent from each race, it's just more to his political advantage to be black right now. Second, I don't care if a person running for office is european-american, african-american, asian-american, native-american, man, woman or whatever, if I think they're the best choice, I vote for them. Each political office race is individual and I vote for who I think is the best person. In the presidental race, I don't trust Obama to be any good as president. He has no record and he changes his stand to fit the polls, so I won't vote for him. In the governor's race, I haven't decided yet. If your analyst would categorize me as I'm a racist because I vote for who I think is the best person, so be it, but I thought Fox 2 was a much better station than that and if I were the station manager, he'd be looking for a consulting job elsewhere.

Gee I could have told you all of that and I didn't even have to waist my time doing a poll!

The poll was a waist of time and money! All any of us have to do is spend five minutes talking to a few black people, then a few minutes talking to a few white people, and you too will be able to come up with the same conclusions.

Can anyone really blame the black people for wanting a black president?

I'll bet if Hillery would have won the bid, you would have seen polls based on sex...oh and I'll bet you can guess the outcome of those polls as well.

A poll and news such as this is nothing more than the same old attempt to get attention based on the hot issue of race. What next an abortion poll? To bad the pollsters have nothing better to do with their time and money...
