Forget border insecurity and depressed wages. The real reason immigration (illegal and otherwise) will be one of the hottest issues in the 2008 election is summed up in five simple words by commentator, former presidential candidate, and sometimes white nationalist Pat Buchanan:  "White America is in flight."

 

The phenominon of Scared White People (or acronymically, SWP) is nothing new.  The Know Nothing movement of the 1840's was founded by native-born Protestants angry over Catholic immigration from Ireland and Germany. A hundred years later, white flight almost emptied out cities like St. Louis. And now, terrified of brown people speaking Spanish, the intellectual heirs of the Know Nothings are falling all over themselves with proposals to seal the borders, make English the official language,  and deny housing and jobs to illegals.

 

As homosexuals were to the 2004 election, so Mexicans will be to 2008. Allegedly concerned about the "devaluation" of marriage and the demise of civilized society, anti-gay marrriage amendments and referenda in 2004 created an issue that brought social conservatives to the polls in vast numbers. Fear of immigrants will probably do the same in 2008 in states like Missouri, where a constitutional amendment to make English the state's official language will be on the November, 2008 ballot.

 

The fascinating trend here is that the SWP movement often isn't exactly sure what it's scared of. All its members know is that America is changing and they don't like it. The latest statistics to give them shivers were Census Bureau figures showing that four states--Texas, California, New Mexico, and Hawaii--now have populations where white non-Hispanics are the minority, a trend that will overtake all of the United States by 2050.

 

Instead of figuring out how to deal with and embrace the future, SWP want to retreat to 1950. Expect the politics of fear to push a lot of buttons--and turn out a lot of voters--in 2008.

Anytime you put a lot of people from different backgrounds together, they will gather in smaller groups with their own kind.

Watch a big gathering, the teenagers will all gather together, the farmers will gather together.

At a party of white and people from Japan, I noticed all the people from Japan gathered on one side of the room and were speaking their language, all the English speaking were gathered on the other side.

This will always happen. Just nature, I guess.

Charles I agree that it will be a big issue for the 2008 election; however, I don't see it that people are upset over legal immigrants, it's the illegal ones that have me fuming. Those I chat with seem to agree.

Hey everybody... just checking in from So Cal... anywhoo..

Jaco, you almost convince me to become a liberal. But you're stealing my best material! No fair! :^) The whole 1950's mentality bit and all that rut. Aww forget it I probably got all that in a party with some of you educated liberal types back when I was going to college.

But yes, the mongrel hoards are coming and there is nothing those who cling to being classified white can do about it. Or can they?

Why don't we just give Texas and New Mexico to the rest of the world and call them immigrant states! Or ask Mexico if it want's to be a commonwealth and when they say no then ask the next central American country?

But aren't we secretly glad that all those other countries aren't prosperous as ours? I mean imagine if China wasn't communist and had the economic power of say... Japan. But oh well... honk if you love Jesus and if you're proud to be American! Because at least I know if I'm not set free from sin I'm free to sin all I want!

White Flight? There is all kinds of White Flight because of illegal aliens.Cocaine they smuggle it in, and instead French Motel(Paris Hilton) getting busted for possession she gets a DUI. Hmm three days in jail is like giving Devil-in 3 minutes at a Boy Scout meeting c'momn folks wake the eFF up.

White Flight sounds like a flight into Lambert and now leaving St.Louis because the place is dead and it's ruined by crooks,so blame race and religion not politics.

Did I miss a part of this post here? If I read correctly, since I think that giving every one in this country illegally a free pass (and no one, not even the government has a clue how many people we are talking about) is a bad idea, I am a scared white person pining away for Ozzie and Harriet and the Browns to come back to town.

My concern about illegal immigrants is fairly simple. Why should I trust someone to respect our laws about taxes, property, or even traffic, if that person has no respect for our laws on immigration matters?

Here is a plan that I would support.

1.Figure out how many people our country can support.
2.Allow that many people to immigrate.
3.If you are here illegally, you go to the back of the line.

Am I the only one bothered by the of Charles’ post? He seems to be implying that if you aren’t for amnesty, then you are some sort of right-wing kook or racist.

Are you nuts! When, if you are right you and I become subservant to other cultures, are you going to be happy having your writings censored, or you have to do your "EDITORIALS" in a foreign language. All people are resistant to change, that's the way it is.
BUT THE REAL ISSUE HERE IS WHAT PART OF ILLEGAL don't you get!!!!!

The issue isn't skin color, it's jobs. Instead of comparing today's fears with the 1950's, you should mention the 1900's when 14 year old girls were tied to sewing machines for 16 hours a day for 12 cents an hour... usually in fire-traps and sweat-shops....

I don't fear the immigrants. I fear the employers who hire them.

Jaco, I have no problems with someone wanting to better themselves but I do have a problem with them breaking the law to do it.

I have many friends of different nationalities that are here legally so why can't these illegals understand that they are welcome as long as they come here the legal way?

it's not as simple as alot of the blogs I have read..Its about history..Its about whats fair.We give politcal refugees a free ticket into this country yet mexicans that are native to north america we make swim the rio grande..And then even though they are working we send them back weither they have american born children or not my niece had that problem her husband was from mexico shes half but born here...Then our farmers bring them up to pick fruit and vegtables and even when they proof they are good people they get sent back..Thats not true with political refugees..So the laws are unbalanced..

As usual Jacko is out of touch with reality. The ONLY reason anyone is upset with ILLEGALS is simply, they are ILLEGAL. They broke the laws of this land just to get here and continue to violate our laws. ALL 12+ Million should be deported along with you Jacko. I really don't understand what Fox 2 sees in this moron. He is wrong on every issue he write or talks about. I'd LOVE a public debate with this guy.
He would be so embarrassed by the end of it that he would have to crawl into a hole like Saddam to escape the ridicule that would surely follow. By the way Jacko, it's NOT only whites upset by the lack of enforcement of our immigration laws, but I understand your attempt to try to make race part of the issue. You're always trying to stir up the pot, but you always use the wrong ingredients.

White flight! that's been going on since the AA migrated to the north.

White people don't care to be around brown skin people.(Majority) they have made Chesterfield, St. Charles, Warrenton, St. peters, Moscow Mills, Troy the new Haven for whites.

But here's the kicker in all this. When the Hispanics become the power house Minority, the AA will suffer beyond anything the whites have done to AA. The Hispanics don't have the tire around their neck called slavery. when an AA complains to them they look them in the eye and say SO WHAT! GET OVER IT!

Yes America is changing and not for the better.
the term Diversity is our strength will not hold water. There will be blood shed in the streets? maybe not in my time but your children will see it.

If your white get out of the cities and start a commune of people that look like you and believe like you.

And last
Marry within your own race.

Fireman33, You are beginning to scare me!! Are you a racist? This blog is for people sincere about whats going on in our country people that need educated about the facts of immigration..Not radical views (marry within your own race) kind of stuff..I am not 100 percent white and that offends me...You are living typeing proof of what jaco is eludeing to in his article..Please cultures may be differant but all people are born with a heart try being a little more sensitive to others..
