Basher51's Bluff and Bluster

by Basher51 from Sussex

Last Post 1 hour Ago

Reading some of the blog postings here and seeing some of the advertisements by the politicians one would be left to believe that there is simply nothing good about his country. How wrong they are!

One of the reasons that I've always loved guys like Ronald Reagan, Teddy Roosevelt, John Wayne is their uniquely American optimism.  They lived and breathed it and if you were around them it was contagious.  They believed that there is nothing that this great country couldn't accomplish.

What in your opinion is right about the USA?  What is noble and pure about this country? If you were trying to convince a foreigner to come here, what you you say to convince him?

ColbyDog, ifilus and all of you other members of the "blame American first" coalition, here is your chance to say something positive.  If you don't have anything that you could brag about regarding this country, then post to your own blog about how bad this country is.  This blog is all about how good we are.

Welcome to the place where it is free to disagree and tell your government what greedy jerks they are and actually LIVE to post another day.

Here's what I've observed in my travels, Bash.
I travel everywhere by car.
We have the most incredible landscapes. A wide variety of plantlife, animals and birds. To see the real beauty of America you have to travel in the countryside. That's also where the nicest people will be. It must be the relaxed atmosphere. I love the diversity of our country and the rich history.
You have to understand that people are fed up with the way things are going. Look at the Dow today. Look at how many people have lost their homes. The war has dragged on and on with no end in sight. As a matter of fact they are taking more soldiers to Iraq and Afghanistan. Now we have a presidential race that is becoming a joke. It's almost surreal.
I would tell a foreigner to visit the rural areas. The small towns. See what America is really like. Not the competitive big cities that they hear so much about and the culture they seem to dislike.

No country has sacrificed more in the name of our own ideals than the United States of America. Socieital freedom, individual liberty--the ability for an individual to pursue happiness on our own terms, not anybody elses.

Consider WW2. We were not directly attacked by Germany, yet, when the time came we stood up and led the fight to defeat Hilter. What did we "get" as a result? Opinions will vary. Yet, we easily could have dominated Europe and and attempted to reap the benefits of European resouces. History shows that we did not do that. In fact, we did just the opposite with the Marshall Plan.

Iraq, in my opinion, illustrates these principles in action today. With thousands freely willing to sacrifice themselves not for any sort of personal benefit, but for a society that had only known brutal oppression. Today, Iraq is just starting to be able to stand on its own, and what will we get out of it? Time will tell. But, our peoples call has long been liberty for all...........what people do with it is up to them.

We can and must continue to be willing to stand and fight for freedom. For the day that are unwilling to fight for freedom is the day we will lose it.

That last line is so true, Dose.
Our freedoms are so important.
I will defend those until I die and instill that same spirit in my children and their children.
There is nothing as important in life as having the freedom to do as you choose as long as you do not harm another living creature.
That is a basic human need and the most important rule.
That's why a system with fair, unbiased laws is needed. That's why situations MUST be looked at as a whole. No black and white. There have to be gray areas to allow understanding of an individual situation based on the facts presented. We have become a black and white society. People no longer question why things happen. We've become a lax society mainly interested in television and movies. Why do we care what actors are doing? Why is that paramount in our society? Why aren't people more interested in what's happening in our world, our government and their own lives?
If you really love your country turn off the TV and jump into reality once in a while. Appreciate our country and all it's beauty and learn what is happening in your world. Or, does reality scare people?

Why are sooooo many people reliant on alcohol and drugs to make it through life?

Why do we have advertisements for prescription drugs?

Why does everything contain high fructose corn syrup?

Why DO sports players earn so much dang money for playing a sport?

Why DO actors get paid so much to pretend?

Why are the landfills overflowing?

Where did all these new diseases and conditions come from?

Just to pipe in on my own thread...the right thing about this country is that we are a nation of optimists. Wallowing in a pity party is not our way. We are a people who are always striving to see what is beyond the horizon. Take a look at the current financial situation. I know more people who are looking at it from an opportunity standpoint "how is this going to shake out?" "how can I best position my investments?" They are confident that we will rebound. It's simply the American way. We rebound. We fight through it. We are willing to do whatever it takes and even more. That's what frustrates our detractors. Everytime that they write off this great people we bounce back stronger and more optimistic than ever before.

In a lot of countries, you fail at a something, say starting a business, that's it. You're done. Here, we allow you to fail as many times as it takes for you to succeed. I never cease to be amazed at how many success stories there are out there where the person has gone broke a half-dozen times or more before finally hitting it rich.

In America, more often than not, the road to success is paved with failure. I personally was broke and unemployed when I started my auto repair business in 1993. Could that happen anywhere else but in America? I don't know about that, but I do know that in America my story is not unique. Here we are all free to try, try, try again. We are all free to change, alter or ammend the things that surround us that would keep us from achieving our goals. We're free to be rewarded in direct relation to the amount of effort we put in. The people who have more, by and large, got more because they put in the time and did what they had to do to get more and/or keep what they have. Rags to riches is the American dream and it happens every day. But you have to put forth the effort. Everyday people have great ideas every day so why aren't they successful? The difference is their ability and willingness to act on their ideas. By the standards of today's world, I'm not rich and I don't expect I ever will be. But if you set money aside...I'm the richest man you'll ever meet. My life is exactly what I'VE made of it and nobody GAVE me anything. I have everything I need and more. How many can say that?

That is exactly "The American Dream". To be a successful business owner or longterm employee, family-oriented and living comfortably.
We have accomplished that also.
To ignore the issues at hand is to be ignorant.
We have problems right now.
We have to discuss the problems in order to solve them.
This isn't anything new.

Kat, I have often felt that the American way is not to talk about the problems, but to talk about the solutions. The old John Wayne approach: "It ain't gettin' done just standin' around" is more like the America that we've known.

You can't get solutions if you say the problems do not exist.

Sometimes we see 'problems' that don't even exist. Or, even more often, problems have a way of working themselves out. No doubt you can see this in your own life.

There is that old saying "Attitude is Everything". I think that is what Mr. Basher51 is getting at in this blog. In blogging, I have noted that it can be very easy for some to get caught up in an abyss of anger, resentment, just abject negativity. It really drives me NUTS!

I have plenty of problems,(I started a busines in real estate several years ago........LOL) we all do, but everyday I do my best to be postive and muddle through things. The alternative is self-defeating with no hope for victory on any level.

You muddle, I'll complain and fight for things to get better.
We all have our lot in life.

Very true. But people who wallow in the problem, bitterly complaining about it, refusing even the suggestion of a solution, are not the folks who succeed in the American game. We've all seen them. They have an excuse why every solution proffered won't work. They are a one person "pity party". They want someone else to fly in with a magic wand and solve things. Sorry, but this country was built on self-reliance. We will give you a hand up. But we won't pick you up. I personally think that is one of the best things about America. You get the satisfaction of doing the job yourself.

I agree completely.
I just find that many Americans ignore the problems hoping they just go away or that someone else will fix them.
Some problems we can not fix ourselves. It takes a group of people fed up with the way things are going and willingness to fight for what's right.

I would note just the fact that we are free to debate issues and problems, and debate the best course of action as to take in addressing them.

This blog and many others illustrates this.

That is something that is "RIGHT ABOUT THE USA!"

This was a much better country until we started accepting immigrants a couple of hundred years ago. This country certainly has very positive possibilities if we are all willing to work at it.

Intersting that so far Colbydog has not offered his view on what is right with this country.

I'm a middle-aged guy who is somewhat overweight and desperately trying to get into the shape that I was 25 years ago. I'm a retired firefighter (City of Waukesha) and I now work as an inspector for insurance companies. I love the work and since I'm an independent contractor I get to set my own schedule. I am also a track chaplain with Motor Racing Outreach Association and minister at Slinger Speedway. As for hobbies, I enjoy watching all types of stock car racing, and am devoted to fishing, travel, photographing Great Lakes ore carriers. I'm a member of the International Defensive Pistol Association and compete locally in action pistol competition.
