This past Wednesday Aug. 1, there was a gang shooting involving very young gang-bangers (the victim was 11, not 13 as reported by the paper) on the south side of Milwaukee, it garnered all of 5 sentences…

13-year-old’s shooting may be gang related
A south side shooting in which a 13-year-old boy was critically wounded is suspected of being gang-related, police reported this morning.

Police spokeswoman Anne E. Schwartz said two 13-year-old boys were riding a bike when there was an exchange of gang signs with a 14-year-old boy, who then fired a weapon, hitting one of the other boys in the back.

The shooting happened about 10:10 p.m. in the 1100 block of W. Scott St.

The 13-year-old is expected to survive. The shooter is in police custody.

But this story has taken a twist that still has not been reported in the major news outlets. This story was broken by the El Conquistador, Milwaukee’s Spanish newspaper and reported to a wider audience by Mark Belling.

It seems that the shooter (who is only 14), ran into a house after shooting the 11 year old, who apparently is now paralyzed. The house that the shooter ran into is the home of County Board Supervisor Peggy West. The shooter was reportedly at the location to see West’s daughter, but when police searched, he was not found in the home, but was later arrested later.

An 11 year old boy is shot in a gang shooting, the gang-banger that pulled the trigger ran into the home of a county board member. How is this not news?

Update: Clarification

Just a quick update, other radio outlets have started reporting on this story, and this morning County Board Supervisor Peggy West came on the Charlie Sykes radio program to answer some questions. Both West and in an email to me, Public Information Manager Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors Harold Mester, confirm that the police report is clear that the shooter did not enter the home of Supervisor West after the shooting and information West gave, helped police track down and arrest the shooter. West also says that her family is now receiving death threats. Keep an eye on Sykes Writes, Charlie will be posting the audio, it is not up now, but I will post a link this evening.

As a mom who has raised a teenage daughter I can tell you I sympathize with Peggy West. This idiot shooter may have been interested in her daughter and she never knew what he was involved in. She did the right thing by assisting the police in tracking him down.
What kind of parents are allowing, or not supervising their children enough to know they have a gun?
Absolutely sad.
Cowards need guns.

it needs to start in those bad neighborhoods. what good is it to take a gang shooting to a county supervisor's home? it needs to start with the parents as well. that is extremely sad when it involves kids and teens.

This is why I left the neighborhood.

This is messed up for real. What was the real motive of this act? And now Supervisor West's family is getting death threats? What is going on? It's time that the parents of the teens and the teens themselves need a serious reality check, or a "come to Jesus meeting" mind you. All of this because of flashing gang signs. Crazy!

Well, this is the precedence set in society when poor word choices are made a big deal over at national levels instead of horrific crimes or the war. It sends and reinforces a bad message to our young and then when they get involved in a verbal altercation, a physical vendetta ensues as retribution. Yes stephen, it sure is messed up!
