I'm sure each of you are concerned about the economic future of this country right now.  After listening to all the pundits I came away with the bejesus scared out of me.  I am not a financial guru, and, perhaps that is why I am so concerned.  I have come away with soundbites such as, "If we bail out FannieMae, FreddieMac, AIG and "world markets" that we will BE, forever, a Socialist nation."  "If we do not bail them out, we will plunge into a deep, deep depression unlike anything known to mankind." I hear two presidential contenders arguing about something that neither are experts about.  I do not understand why they don't EACH say, "This economis crisis is being addressed by the brightest minds in this nation.  It is not appropriate to second guess their recommendations until we hear what they have to say."... but neither can do that....fools that they are.  Also, does anyone understand why we are "bailing out WORLD MARKETS?  Now, don't tell me that, "Well it's the new world order" because I, personally, don't give one whit about the new world order...I am just deeply concerned about this poor, unstable, crumbling nation.  On top of this depressing mess, McCain says he will cut social security benefits in half when he is in office.  Most people barely receive enough money to stay alive on social security NOW.  Also, pundits are saying that it makes no difference WHO is president... there will be no money for health care or anything else....it is all in the bail outs which have just begun.  Nice.  Your thoughts on this mess?

Ave, I agree neither McCain nor Obama are economists or have a background in economics, but this is politics so they have act like they do. I'm sure if there was a crisis in the knitting world, both McCain and Obama would give speeches that make it sound like they know a purl from a knit, when everyone knows they don't. It's a way to garner confidence in voters who don't have the common sense to see through the political charade.

As for bailing out world markets----all the world's economies are connected to each other. If you picture the world economy like a tree, if a small branch dies, it probably won't kill the tree. But if a major branch or even the trunk dies, bye bye tree. The US is a major branch....perhaps even the trunk itself. IF the US economy tanks, so will Europe's, Asia's and the rest of the world.

If I were president, I would cut social security benefits by not giving them to illegal aliens and limiting those benefitst to legal immigrants (yes, our system is so screwed up, you can come here from another country, apply for and receive SSI.) I would also refuse to accept the Presidential salary for my term in office and would make every other elected official in the US either forgo their salary completely or take a 95% pay cut. But that's just me....other politicians can't take a pay cut because they need to finance their resort villas in the Dominican Republic.

Was that a Rangel wrangle at the ends? lol

Per Senator Biden's logic, Congressman Rangel is not patriotic because only patriotic Americans will pay higher taxes. Congressman Rangel avoided paying higher taxes for years.

Personally, I think we should have stopped wasting our money on foreign aid decades ago. We should have kept that money and used it on our infrastructure and our citizens and to save for a rainy day, rather than waste it on people half a world away. But that's just me....other Americans think it's more moral to give our tax dollars to villages in the third world, rather than to spend it on our senior citizens, veterans and disabled.

AveMarie:

I agree with your statement; "I hear two presidential contenders arguing about something that neither are experts about. I do not understand why they don't EACH say,"

They should be saying; I'm not the President at this time and not in the position of authority to render a solution to this issue nor give a hypothetical response to something involving another administration's duty...

They're called advisors. Presidential candidates can't possibly be experts on half of the things they have on their plate. That is why they have a slew of advisors and, therefore, how they can speak with some authority on various subjects. Obama, BTW, has superlative advisors Madeline Albright, Robert Rubin, Larry Summers, et al....

Re foreign aid:
During the Cold War we HAD to give aid. Now, we do it out of charity and keeping friends and issues on our side, e.g. Pakistan, Afghanistan, Africa. It can be a cruel world out there. Before it was communism now it is terrorism. Only during the 90s did we have a respite and so called Peace Dividend when we didn't have the threat of urgent enemies to face.

I would NOT vote for McCain simply on his statement that he would cut Soc. Sec. Can't do that in mid stream to the people. Not a populist solution to a deep problem. Congress has looked the other way too long. then we end up with seismic problems which we, the People, have to pay for NOT they.

Your statement; "Now, we do it out of charity and keeping friends and issues on our side, e.g. Pakistan,"... Well, Pakistan's new President stated on the news this morning; "We will not allow military operations in our country to hunt terrorist."

I was watching a town meeting on Mccain a day or so ago and he said nothing about cutting Social Security. He said they need to fix it because right now it's broke.

Reddog...I heard him say it myself. I don't think anyone can fix the mess that we are in right now, and I don't believe it was an accident. Where the heck is the news media? Why aren't they inside Harvard interviewing top eonomists so that the people in this country can get a real fix on just how serious this matter really is and what can be done about it. I think most Americans want to cooperate, however, when our government is secretive, they loose the public's support.

To be blunt, I want to know how the heck we got here and WHO put us here, and what, specifically we need to do to fix it and how long will it take to bring us up to speed. I want to know who to kick in the adz.

Corrupt politicians that's who.

It's amazing how they steal billions.

I want them out!

Republican and Democrats all fat cats feeding on the Nations taxpayers.

Time to clean house!

Madeleine Albright???? Wasn't she the Secretary of State when we invaded Kosovo? I STILL don't understand what we were doing there...

Ave, who got us into this mess? We did. World economy and world trade has been in play for centuries. When we were colonies, we were active in world trade. When we were a young nation we were involved in world trade. As the world changed from an agarian to industrial to technological economy, so have we. Had we never kept up, we would have been like China throughout most of the 20th century---a large country with plenty of natural resources, but dirt poor.

CC I agree partly with your statement. But I think that those most responsible for this mess are those who done risky business due to greed. The housing issue is a prime example of just that. Many lenders gave not just one, but two or more loans to people that had either, bad credit, no credit or they simply didn't check it. They also gave these same people loans without proper income verification. I work with a man who not only bought one $500K but another as well. He makes less then $90K, yet his income was verified only once. I know because they have to send me the papers to verify it. Now, I hold not only the lenders responsible for him losing his second home, but him as well. He should have known that he could barely afford the first house, let alone the second. But I hold the lenders in mostly responsible because they should have known he could barely afford his first home, let alone his second. Now, some will say he didn't understand the paper work, but that is a cop out, it's his responsibility as a buyer to KNOW what he is signing. All bought because of greed and thinking they would be able to make a huge profit. These houses were bought only one year ago. NOW he has not only lost one, but is most likely fighting to keep his other one from going under as well because of the mortgage going up and his income went drastically down.
The market is run partly on greed, its how people make more money. But that greed can also be their downfall, such as we are seeing now. This will not be fixed over night, it will take years to undo what has been done in the past 8 years

we can't get rid of the nitwits on the hill as well. I actually feel sorry for the next President. He has one heck of a mess to try and clean up. We all know it can't be done in four years, but they will most likely be booted out after four and deemed a failure because they can't fix this mess. Not because they won't try, but because its not feasible to do in just four years. Took longer to get us in this mess.
But this current mess, its like the snowball effect, the snowball was housing, now its just getting bigger.

Uh...caffein...I don't quite get it that we did this to ourselves. This nation has been around since 1776 with pretty much the same laws and modus operandi....and this is the SECOND big time problem with our finances. The first was a wall street driven crash that destroyed the big guys and the american people in the process. This time it is the banks, lending institutions, and big time insurance brokers... and, I wonder just how much we've learned from the FIRST crash? We all know isolationism does not work...but I have a suspicion that THIS one has been engineered on purpose...remember what they say, a fool and his money are soon parted. Is it possible to extricate the american people from this so-called "world market mess". You know, the heretofore thought of as "crackpot" Lyndon Laruche said, more than three years ago, "Banks and lending institution are bankrupt as I speak. Within the next three years everyone will know that this is true. The only thing holding them up are the loan payments, and the credit card payments the American people are making." I read one of his handouts a couple of months ago and he said he had written to the whitehouse begging them to listen to him....and, of course, no one did. Now, here we are. You all know that if our economic situation continues to degrade that crime will increase. I suppose, then, we will all be glad to see the slimy marxist buzzards come crawling in with "apparent" solutions to the problem. We can all have a slice of nothing...you know.. redistribution of wealth. Clearly, the next president can and will do nothi

90's ...hmmmm ...

...destroyer pullin' in for a refuel in Yemen and get's a mighty hole blasted in it's port side and cost the loss of somethin like 17 crewmen, world trade center bombing, Somalia intervention (wonderfully stupid show - black hawk down and all), Embassy bombing demolishment ...the Balkans ...opportune target on Bin Laden and we balk …intel for all intensive purposes in a coma leading up to World Trade Centers plane terrorist destruction, …the Iraq tension in the years following Desert Storm …N. Korea and the useless agreement the US made - the North got bountiful gifts and we bent over for it all as they busily stepped up their long missile program and development of weapons grade nuclear material …

…peaceful must carry a different meaning, depending on who’s sayin‘ it?

Hmmmm....beagle....what did we get for all of our financial support of other countries? Let's see....Peru sent 6 troops, Ecuador sent...a couple....Great Britain was the only country involved with us.....none of the European countries got involved in Iraq....hmmm. I think we need to go ahead and send all of our tax dollars to bail out the buzzards.....nice.

How about Georgia??? Remember that McCain said he wanted to send them 2 BILLION dollars to them.....I don't believe I recall Georgian troops in Iraq...you???? But what the hey, huh? Bull, guys. This country consists of complete idiots and non-patriots...not ONE in Washington gives a hoot about this country...and I, for one, am sick of them. We are REALLY in a mess right now...and NO ONE is at the wheel!
