Okay, gang.  Someone just told my son (college aged) that McCain has said he will reinstitute the draft.  If you have heard this, please tell me the source and when McCain said this.  There are three voters that will probably not vote AT ALL at election time.  If McCain said this, is he nuts?  I don't get it.  Is he TRYING to get Osama elected????

Actually. some older lady thanked McCain and said several sentences about the war on terror and asked about a draft, and McCain said thanks, not making ANY specific comments. This has been batted about with the liberal media and taken out of context.
=========================================
For those of you who can’t watch clips online, a woman in the audience
told the presumptive Republican nominee, “Senator McCain I truly hope
you get the opportunity to chase Bin Laden right to the gates of hell
and push him in as you stated on your forum. I do have a question
though. Disabled veterans, especially in this state, have horrible
conditions…. I think it is a sad state of affairs when we have illegal
aliens having a Medicaid card that can access specialist top
physicians, the best of medical and our vets can’t even get to a
doctor. These are the people that we tied yellow ribbons for and Bush
patted on the back. If we don’t reenact the draft I don’t think we
will have anyone to chase Bin Laden to the gates of hell.”

McCain, without hesitation, responded, “Ma’am, let me say that I don’t
disagree with anything you said and thank you and I am grateful for
your support of all of our veterans.”

Now, it’s likely McCain was just being polite. But the woman who spoke
at the event insisted we have to “reenact the draft,” and McCain said
he didn’t disagree with anything she said.

Hey AveMaria;

Remember when Goldwater was running against Johnson? Remember the issues then?

All I can remember is the rumor that we kids would have to start going to school on Saturdays!

One wonders if kids did go to school 6 days a week then, would they be any smarter today? Guess not.

Anyhow, tell your son not to worry, the re-enlist number is at 65%. The volunteer army is alive and well. No need for the draft.

Well....Y3, I was so concerned that I sent John McCain an e-mail about the comment....don't know if he will have a staff member respond...I sincerely hope so. I'd like a REALLY clear answer on that....and, myresponse...when you say there is no need for the draft, well, at the moment there isn't...however, if the USA cannot keep its mouth shut and stay out of others business, we will end up in WWIII. Clearly, we can't seem to keep our mouths shut.

No but do YOU listen to Mark Levin*? He's been going in depth every day on n0bamas policies, background and such. He plays sound bites, and has people who opposed him when he was just a sleazy state politician. VERY INTERESTING. So much so that the lefties here HATE HIM! he must be hitting the nerve! LOL

No...I haven't listened to radio much. I'll have to give that a shot, too. I've been trying to accomplish something reading-wise...I used to have a policy that I would read at least one book every 4 weeks..and have not done that over the last year or so. I start to feel as if I live in a culvert or under a bridge..sort of like trolls do. LOL. I will tune in to Mark Levin's program and give you my humble opinion of his programming skills. By the way...what do you think of Biden?

Ave, Even if McCain got elected and wanted to reinstate the draft, it wouldn't be done by him alone. Congress also has to agree. They won't and it will never happen. I think to many people in this country are sick of the war now and wouldn't stand to see a draft reinstated to just keep it going.

I am a Reserve Soldier. I was an active duty Soldier for a long time. Those of us who are professional Soldiers oppose a draft. We don't want you unless you WANT to be here because it affects morale, unit cohesion, and readiness.

it's funny ...forty years ago I viewed it as a responsibility to serve in the armed forces and like many things it would be done when it looked like it fit an order of those things I expected to do in my life ...I chose the time and have no regrets …I think it made me strong in my interest to see a valuable life survive for the benefit it can be to myself and others - I gained a stronger sense of the unique lives we’ve enjoyed in this nation ...I think a voluntary Armed Forces has more merit than that of a draft policy ...in that view I have the confidence those on either side of me are where they are cause it was a voluntary commitment instead of something they're living with cause it was imposed on them ...that gives me the feeling my life is relying on those who have an interest in us all makin' it among the living ...

...to drop back to my beginning, the disappointment I have is households during the past 30-40 years seem to have raise their broods centered around the material life style and put a negative look on patriotic values and service honoring those who came before them, offering the prospect to those who follow their opportunities will be as great or greater than mine have been... Today we’ve got a very strong “me’ers” cross section of citizens who don’t care to see that interrupted and try to strengthen that attitude by casting service in the Armed Forces as a sub-intellect following …guess in the end it depends on how you’re brought up…

I totally agree with jdwalker as we need men and women who truly want to serve our Country, not some pansies that would put others in harms way. Your right beagle_buddy our patriotic values have diminshed dramactically, but a lot of people easily forget that our MILITARY are the ones that hold our FREEDOM in this Country! Like it or not... Bush has saved more lives here in America. Do you have any earthly idea of how many terroists have been stopped by our CIA? I don't like War.. but if we did nothing.. we would be just like Iraq.. and I refuse to wear those robes over my head and beg for money on the streets! You have no voice unless you become one of them! Bottom line as our fathers before us.. It's the American Way for Freedom.

I hope McCain DOES re-institute the draft-FOR ALL ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS AND THOSE ON WELFARE!!! They should be put to work defending our country instead of milking the system! How many million illegals are there in the US? And if you add to them all of the able-bodied low life people that collect welfare, THAT should fill the need for a few years!

Good Point Honest...

I do feel McCain is result driven enough to stop the rampid abuse of illegals crossing our borders. He is strong willed and he will bring to the table success and new vision of policies that have been long needed. What gets me is that illegals have ruined their Country, so now they want to ruin ours.

Given the fact that too many young men in the country have become so abhorrently soft in mind and body, there is no way that reinstating the draft would be feasible. Sadly, 20 years of MTV, spectator sports, video games, and fast food have rendered the average American youth unfit for service. To bring one of these guys to a fighting level would be far too costly and likely result in a high degree of cardiac arrests, mental breakdowns, or outright desertion. Stick with a volunteer force. You get guys (and gals) who are generally fit, of at least average intellectual capacity, and most importantly...committed.

I was just like you during the Vietnam War, SuperRight...but I had a good long look at what patriotism actually means...and it is NOT sending our best off to die for pontificating politicians. Patriotism is too often the buzz word to ramp up fervor reminiscent of religious fervor that can block out "thinking." I, also, see too many young folks who enlist because the job situation sucks at home. The military provides a way out of rural America and can be very good for those great young men and women who find tremendous self growth when exposed to the world out there. There is a group of young people who simply love the job. I agree that a volunteer military is the way to go...but when those not oriented to the military are put in headlocks and forced to become a part of it...well...I just take a dim view of that.

I agree with all your sentiments and I am disapproving of politicians involved in military matters and using our men and women as poltical pawns. Of course, even Machiavelli had a hard time finding a better way to wage war for the purpose of national gain.

My point was to view the draft vice volunteer issue as a purely tactical one related to the battlefield. Conscription is fine in dire matters, but even under those conditions, you rely more on your volunteer forces given their willingness to be soldiers. I saw this first hand while in the FFL. We were all volunteer by design and served as elite forces because of that design characteristic. France finally did away with its conscription in 2001 after struggling with problems for decades.
