I recently viewed a story on the 9 o'clock news where the city of Racine was placing cameras on certain streets. The cameras gave the police much more techology wise but I find it to be a violation of our right to privacy and a waste of taxpayer money (50k each). Gary Becker, the mayor, is running the city into the ground.

It is my understanding that these cameras are in public view, and view public areas. Hence, there is no privacy to be violated. When the City of Milwaukee announced that they would be looking into to same type of camera monitoring by the police I called my alderman and volunteered to have a camera put on my corner first. The only people who have something to fear from these cameras are people who have something to hide!

And I'm sure you don't mind paying for it with your taxes. Racine will never see the return on investment (ROI) for purchasing these cameras. Also, everyone's taxes are paying for these cameras that are only being placed in specified locations. What if you don't get your camera? Won't you feel cheated? This is that start of a horrible "big brother" type of thing. Watch out!

I agree Garageman, if your doing nothing wrong you have nothing to worry about. I thought, although I am not 100% sure that these cameras played a role in finding the 2 young men who shot and killed a pregnant woman on National Ave in broad daylight.

If it helps to catch criminals, then I don't have a problem with them. Just my opinion.

I love the cameras in the city of Cudahay. They
even have them at grant park. It has stopped the people that are commiting crimes to stay off the cornor. It has help the police in the park stop the crime. They can have my tax dollars any day to remove the people from the streets that are breaking the law. I see Milwaukee has also started this. 76th and Bluemound has some.
This is well spent money.

As it happens, this is one thing that I would happily pay for with tax money. And indeed these type of cameras were the ONLY witness to the murder of a pregnant woman on National Ave in broad daylight. If you think that this is the BEGINNING of "Big Brother" you would be wrong. "Big Brother" has been watching you for longer than you might think. Let's not forget these cameras are on upgrade on cameras that already exist at these locations as I understand it. I won't feel cheated if I don't get a camera on my block because frankly there are neighborhoods in more dire need than mine. The return on investment Racine will see may or may not be monetary. The payoff will be a decrease in criminal activity.

There are already cameras in place on many stop lights that people aren't even aware of yet. The majority of people are not affected by this, that is, until they get a traffic ticket via mail along with an explanation that they were spotted on a camera speeding or whatever they were cited for. Look alive people and start following the laws, big brother IS watching and he's got your number!

They had a report on one of the news mags on TV about a guy who was sick of the drug dealers and prostitutes on his block. He went after them with a video camera and poof, his block was clean. It is amazing what an accountability tool can do for you and your neighborhood.

There couldn't be enough camera's to curb the crime in Milwaukee. Keep installing those camera's!

GITRDONE; Many people THINK that these are cameras that are located at intersections where there are traffic light but in reality they play a roll for the Emergency Services in your area. When an emergency vehicle is running lights & sirens in the direction of the receiver (that you think is a camera) it triggers the light to go green in his/her favor. Yes, I know that in some places there might actually be cameras for red light runners but you will usually see some kind of sign stating what the camera is for.

Snowhawk~
Yes I realize this, but having a daughter that was a firefighter, I know which are which. Trust me...there are many cameras on many stop lights across Milwaukee, Muskego, Waukesha...

OK! I just know that many people are not aware of the difference and what the other units are used for but thanks for the update.

Jive, I would say it's the criminals who are running Racine into the ground.
The same in Milwaukee.
I see nothing wrong with cameras in public places. The only time they even check the video is if a crime is committed.
Again, the only people that have to worry are the criminals. Many bars and restaurants have DVR systems just in case a crime occurs. You'd be surprised how many establishments use video recording. Isn't it good to know that if you are robbed or worse that there will be evidence to convict a criminal?

I think these cameras are a good idea. I would say the only ones that would complain that it's a violation to your right to privacy are those that get caught on camera. I would rather pay for these cameras with my tax dollars than allow crime in the neighborhoods and streets! Also cameras are only in specified locations but the idea of people knowing there are cameras out there and not necessarily knowing where they are placed may help dissuade crime.

I am very surprised. But you're all entitled to your own opinions even if you're wrong.

Smile. You're on candid camera at most times when you are outside of your own house. Big Brother is needed. It's time to run the criminals out of town.

I just don't understand why you're all so willing to give up your civil rights for this. Is the crime really that bad? I just stay away from bad areas.

I am a secular athiest, residing in Milwaukee hoping to see more diversity within this city. I am frusterated with our country's domestic and foreign policies and ashamed to be an American. I enjoy blogging because it gives me a chance to voice for those who are poor and less fortunate than the supposed affluent in this city.
