This afternoon, I saw that a barrell of oil surpassed the $100 mark. What a great start to '08!

When will the notion of forgein energy dependency and limited natural resources set in? Not only is oil expensive from a monetary standpoint, but it's also expensive from an environmental standpoint. I have began looking at hybrid cars which are very costly and unaffordable for me at this time. JD Byrider doesn't have any hybrids, but will let me know if they come across one. What are your ideas for being less dependent on oil and more conscience about the environment?

since the cost of oil is going up $100.00, that means that our natural gas prices are going up as well for those of us who use natural gas in our homes. great job on the posting of this blog.

when pResident Arbusto Bush took office, oil was at $12 a barrel... the oil barron has done a great job helping the oil industry get rich. Gee, lets get the government to subsidize another refinery... the poor oil companies can't afford to make one themselves, they're barely making ends meet in this scary global-warming world.

poor oil companies... we should all consume more fossil fuels to help the poor energy companies...

fill'er up and go shopping!

Happy new year. Gas went up, the price of registering your car just went up, driver's licenses went up, cigarettes went up. When do we get a break? I don't understand why Bush and Doyle don't get assassinated at this rate!

Stop buying SUV's and huge trucks would be a start. How many huge Tundras, F-150's, Titans etc. have you seen at stop lights with only the driver in the vehicle? How many times have you seen them accelerate like they're at the Great Lakes drag track (am I dating myself)? Twenty five years ago or so we had most of the oil market to ourselves. Now we have a a whole bunch of folks in India and a billion or so in China who want the oil as much as we do. If you think $100 a barrel is bad you had better hang on to your shorts because oil prices are probably the only thing that gravity doesn't affect. $3.75 to $4.00 a gallon by the 4th of July, but keep those gas guzzlers coming - we are America and it's our constitutional right to drive what we d--- well please. Our only hope is to have Hillary or Obama or Edwards in the White House and Bush gone (right ColbyDog?). Then we'll see $25 a barrel and $1.19 per gallon.

I hope all the prices go way up not only for oil but for food, clothing, everyday life needs, that way we can have a real recession, and all you tree huggers lose your jobs, your houses and hopefully starve.Nothing like getting back to your whiny butt roots. What does high energy prices mean to you who are save the planet crusaders, you do not use energy or resources, right! Good world chaos cleanses out the weak. I for one will burn, consume, and buy as much crap as I can, this planet is eventually going to be gone anyways.

guyvrburlington-

Your attitude shows your ignorance and simple mind. Food, clothing prices going up and causing a recession is bad for everyone. Some of us in here only want to discuss alternatives to using so much oil everday. Please do not comment on my blog unless you have an actual arguement instead of name calling and hate.

thnaks,

naw Jive let em yap... he speaks for a vocal and thankfully-shrinking minority. Any god-fearing person knows he'll be answering for his actions - be it karma, the almighty or the collective in the great beyond... no action goes without an equal and opposite reaction... whether we perceive it or not.

Take Take Take guyBr... perhaps in the next life, you may return as the leech you are today...

skeptical1 makes good points besides the sarcasim at the end.
Keep buying those Humers and driving like Matt Kenseth on a Sunday afternoon at Daytona!
Most people in America are too selfish to turn their thermostat down to save money/energy, why should we expect anyone to make REAL changes in their lifestyle?
The place I started working last year didn't even recycle paper or aluminum cans when I started!
Most Americans are selfish and won't change until the oil runs out or the Apocalypse in Dec of 2012.

Selfish is a great word to describe those who are making no efffort to decrease their carbon footprint.

Ok, so for the past three years, I have been waiting until November to even turn on my heat, turning down my thermostat every year. We now keep our house at 64 during the day. I walk whenever possible. I keep my house lights off whenever I can. I keep tv off if nobody is watching. I insulated my basement, bought a fuel efficient car for my husband to drive to and from work, and no he can't take the bus. We live in Wisconsin and he works in Illinois. I conserve my water in a few different ways. I stopped using the heated dry cycle on my dishwasher and only run it when it is full. I bought energy efficient washer and dryer, and the washer uses less water. I take fewer napkins when we do eat out, and I reuse my bath towels. I would install a solar type whatever it is so that I can sometimes run off of the sun's energy, but have you seen the cost of that? What else is there to do?

Oh, and we do have a timer in the bathroom so the kids don't spend more than 5 minutes in the shower. When we are away, we keep our heat down as low as we safely can in the winter, and in the summer, the air stays off unless the temp in the house reaches over 85, then it goes on, but mostly only at night. We also did replace both our furnice and air conditioner, aong with new windows that are supposed to be more energy efficient. And people say they WANT to use as much as they can? Wow.

I think energy might be a good focal point to push in the upcoming election. We cannot continue prostituting our principles to pocket themselves and big oil companies. Exxon and BP have all reported record earnings in the past 2 years. I see why they have been so successful with the prices.

Better stated, the oil giants recorded the most profit ever made by a corporation in the history of the world... and they've beat their record the past five quarters!

(well I guess when Columbus looted the aztecs a government may have made more money... but never a corporation)

Still no one seems to mind when the Bush Administration offers big subsidies and huge tax incentives for these energy giants to build refineries... gives them legislative access to ethanol production and pushes hard against any passive energy program that doesn't line their pockets.... yep, we're too busy trying to cut our consumption or like dopey guyBR- just clueless and arrogant.

MrsT, you are doing great, just keep being vocal... talk it up and ask questions... also look to the Urban Ecology Center for answers... write to the journal and your local legislator.

Great job Mrs T!
I'm no tree hugger but I do what I can to help out ol' Mother earth.
I recycle everything I can, when I buy new appliacnes they are always "energy star" rated, low flow toilet and shower heads, flourescent bulbs, new windows and doors on the casa.
Some people think that one person can't make a difference but if we all do our part at least it will make a small difference.
People also need to keep an eye on China, no EPA over there!

Thanks for the compliments you guys but I am so ticked off. Eythonol is NOT the answer. Yes people do comsume more than they need. I am home during the day and I still keep my heat down. I am going to call WE energies and have them do an assessment on my home, but at this point, the only thing I can see them suggesting is me changing my lightbulbs. NO WAY am I going to use those flourscent bulbs though. Our lights only go on when we need them, and the Flourscent lights don't help my mood any. I need my light or I go nuts.

And as for oil running out, we have so much oil in our own country, but are not allowed to dig for it. Do you know what would make a huge difference? If companies made 10 hour work days 4 days a week, or set people up to work from home once or twice a week. Then there would be fewer cars on the road, the office buildings themselves would be using less energy and water. But NO it is about the almight dollar. I will say that I think it is JC penney who will actually set you up to work from home to take calls for sales from the catalogue. Now that is what companies need to do. Plus it will reduce the amount of accidents which will help with medical costs. Why can't companies do that?

Its the almighty dollar... they fear you might not be as productive were you at home with all the distractions... even though studies show most people work more... when at home... they work into the night and on weekends ...

but as far as our oil... comeon... we need to conserve, not drill. Oil is a finite commodity... if we've got oil here, lets refrain from being so greedy as to use it all up for ourselves. Oil makes so many products we take for granted... we use it up it won't be empty gas tanks in cars that kills us but all the other things petro-chemicals make that will bring us to our knees.

leave the oil in the ground... its our planet's savings account... don't spend it all right away... thats stupid.

Ok, that is the problem. Nobody wants to drill our own oil and use it for our own people, nobody wants to build new refineries in their areas, but yet they want cheaper oil. It isn't going to happen unless we use less. At this point, how do you use less? You can't mandate that people stay home, but you can "encourage" companies to do more to possibly shorten their work week, or encourage telecommuting with tax breaks. (Doyle would probably have a heart attack if he read that) My husband works from home whenever possible. He does have to go into the office most of the time, but all he has to do is ask, and usually they tell him yes. Stores and resturanuts can shorten their hours. That would tick alot of people off, but remember when things were closed on Sunday? I don't. More people had no choice but to stay home.
But we live in a world where we have to have everything and we have to have it available to us 24/7. That comes with consequences to the environment. You can't have it both ways.
