I am so excited this week because minimum wage will increase to 5.85. With more to come. I know some are thinking it as just a mere $.70 raise, but it's a start. How do we expect these people to live on such a low wage? It's a crime that the minimum wage isn't at least 10 dollars per hour.

Why not raise the minimum wage to $30.00 per hour? Why stop there? Let's legislate that every American (perhaps we should include the illegal aliens too) be a millionaire? Why set any limits? By the way, on another note, you're A_Jive_-Soul_Bro name indicates you have a soul, but if you're an athiest, you can't have a soul! What gives?

Well Harley I hardly think that an increase in minuimum wage which still doesn't even compare with inflation is that bad. If anything they have not been upping it for too long most states already have higher minimum wage laws. The Feds are just playing catch up. I think that they deserve to be paid more then 6.5 an hour especially when costs of loving are so high.

Oh and I know this is off topic Jive but I can't access your blog on universal health care and I suspect no one else can. Another question what is your picture of?

Cost of loving is high; take a look at child support - 17 of gross income.

The moral of the story: Wap dap wascal - Use a condom if you can't control your urges.

Get an education - go to MATC (very affordable) or go to college. Go to a trade school, learn to do something so you don't get stuck in a low-income job.

$6.50 an hour is fine if you are a high school kid and live at home. I made my car payments on minimum wage when I lived at home. Bought my clothes and put money away for school. I worked hard, paid a lot of dues. Many people in my generation did.

I don't see that happening with today's young people.

Lack of commmitment? Lack of taking life seriously?

Minimum wage jobs are not for a person raising a family. They are starter jobs and 2nd jobs. If your ambition level is so low that you never see yourself out of a minimum wage job, you are in trouble. Raising the minimum wage too high will devistate small busines. Desert Wind, you are correct. If you can't raise a family on your wage don't start a family.

Nothing would destroy the economy faster than $10.00 an hour for minimun wages. If you are a life long burger flipper, you need to move up the ladder.

I too agree with what you said deserwindrider, volkd, and greenlawn.

Why do so many of you expect things to be just given to you. Hard work is the key to success even if it means you work more than one job to become stable. Take a third shift job in a factory where it is more than minimum wage. Noone ever said we need to settle.

Demboy08, why go for a raise that still leaves those poor souls in poverty? If you're going to fight for them, why not fight to get them above poverty and into the middle class at the very least. I agree with everyone else here, that people need to become responsible for their own actions and get an education, or experience that leads to higher paying jobs. The fight you're fighting for is a loser from the very start. The people will still be in poverty.

If you are just siiting there waiting for minimum wages to increase, you might as well be working in a gas station, whaching the cars go by. The key to moving up is education, maturity and experiance. Sitting on your @ss and waiting for the goverment to boost your wages is going to get you nowhere. Yes it's a capitalist world out there, no shmitd. Swim or sink! Jive you might consider a coespondants course. You could get a degree in whining in 2 to 3 mounths!

While first of all I am going to attend college and maintain a 3.8 gpa so I definitley work hard. Second I completely understand that raising it up has problems for the economy. I am simply saying that it should be raised up at the same rate as inflation or else our economy will really get messed up because raising the minimum wage has a ripple effect more or less raising everyones wages slightlly. I am not saying a wage increase is how to deal with the problems of the poor or little guy. I just want to keep up with inflation and us teenagers which are trying to pay for college find it harder every year when college costs are going up 9% every yeear while wages are stagnant.

increasing the minimum wage to $10 an hour would force many smaller businesses out of the picture, leading to more monopolization of services. i think that would be a bad thing for consumers, even if wages are bumped up accross the board.
competition is a good thing, and with the little guys getting swallowed up by the big guys, there would be less choices, and thus, less competition for our business.
minimum wage jobs are, in my opinion, 'entry level' jobs for those with little or no skills to 'earn while you learn' - they are not supposed to be career positions.

I need some form of reference if your going to say things like raising minimum wage will slightly raise everyone else's wage's. There are students loans, grants, scholarships etc.. you pay for college after you've graduated and have a "real" job.

It is the bump up law. If you raise the people making 6.50 you have to 7.25 you have to raise the people making 7.25 to someone else's salary and then them up and so on and so forth. All those student loans and scholarships don't really do it and kids are not goiong to college. It is just too much for the middle class. Even with my parents paying for half I still won't have enough money to pay for it even though I work as much as I can. I think the bill congress came up with will fix little. As long as scholarships and loans do not keep pace with cosr fewer and fewer low income and middle income kids will go to college and we will need higher minimum wage laws so that they can support themselves. If we are not willing to help them one way we will be forced to help them another way that does not work as well. You should understand that.

Is it to much to ask someone who has a yearly net income of $100,000 to pay an extra $2300 dollars per year to help fight poverty? You guys all assume there's work for everyone and we're supposed to make the sacrifces that you suggest of "working 3rd shift", ect. However what sacrfice do any of you make?

Just because someone has more money than someone else doesn't mean they should have to give more money, pay more taxes because "they can". We should just let government controll everything and they can pay us all the same amount and life will be great. Why does someone have to sacrifice to give to someone else??? That sounds like a more resonable question. This new take care of me mantality is crippeling our nation and people just expect everything to be givin to them. Work hard, "sacrifice" and make due with what you have!

I work 50-70 hours/week. I am over-employed, but guess what, I don't work for minimum wage. That's what education does for you. I'm still in school part-time. Sometimes, us middle class folk just have to work harder, and take longer to acheive our goals, because bills need to be paid. Believe me, the more I make, the more the Gov't takes, so I pay my fair share. Raising minimum wage just results in more out-sourcing to Mexico, China, and India, and/or a higher price for consumer goods.

So what are people that cannot afford to pay their electrical bills, medical bills and to cloth our children supposed to do?

How do I work 70 hours per week and raise my children?

Why stop there, though?

We could boost the minimum wage to $50 an hour and end poverty altogether...

AJSB I do have a college degree and I do work third shift and I do make great money. I also have a family and that is a sacrifice by not being home at night. Sometimes I work 12 to 16 hour shift if something happens on my shift. I don't cry about it but instead do it.

I am a secular athiest, residing in Milwaukee hoping to see more diversity within this city. I am frusterated with our country's domestic and foreign policies and ashamed to be an American. I enjoy blogging because it gives me a chance to voice for those who are poor and less fortunate than the supposed affluent in this city.
