As my husband and I sat
and watched this horrible crash unfold on the news, we were appalled and
disturbed to see what appeared to be a deceased body dangling from the waist by
a rope from one of the fire trucks ladders and being dumped to the ground. What
really made us mad is what we consider the unfair treatment of “regular
deceased civilians” being
placed on the dirt barely covered by white sheets for hours waiting to be taken
by the coroner. However, when a “deceased LAPD officer” was found to
be one of the casualties, she was removed on a backboard, properly covered by
an American flag and immediately taken to a waiting ambulance, surrounded by
hundreds of fellow officers. I am not
saying that our service men and women are not important, but when you see
distraught families being kept away and not given any information as to the
plight of their loved ones, it seems completely unfair. If one of those “regular
deceased civilians” was one of my loved ones, I would be extremely
pissed. When an officer is off duty they are just another “regular deceased civilian” and
should be treated the same as anyone else, in a mass tragedy like this, special
treatment should only be given when an officer is killed in the line of duty.
